I work at a Kroger and am the favorite among the employees and many customers. Every once in a while we get customers that go completely ballistic over nothing and go on rants and complain on and on, belittling you and your co-workers etc.

Today this guy came in through the U-Scan and the thing said, "The attendant has been notified to assist you", and the attendant (nicest cashier in the store, 55 y/o or so woman) had her hands full at the moment. About 15 seconds later she came over to help the guy and he starts yelling at her getting right up in her face saying she needs to get her priorities straight and that she needs to help him before doing other things. She said, " sorry I was busy at the moment" and the guy just kept belittling her saying she shouldn't have a job here and should be fired, and to call over the manager. The front-end manager came over and he started ranting about how terrible the attendant customer service was, etc it goes on for about 5 mins, and he starts pointing fingers at the manager's face saying (exact words), "I'm the customer! I'm allowed to have an attitude! You're here to service me!" and he asked for all of the people's names and the store managers phone number and stormed out. He made the 55 y/o woman cry and sadly this happens on a weekly basis with different customers.

At those moments when a customer is belittling the employees I'm allowed to say almost anything I want. I want to know what you guys think are some really good comebacks and things to say when a rude person comes up to you and says **** like, "What are you a robot, all you do is say sorry" and "Hurry the **** up" and "You don't deserve to have a job"

well. i used to be a host at outback for 2 years and i had customers go CLEAN off on me for not getting them seated or skipping them etc. and the best thing to do is to smile at them, even sometimes laugh, then get the manager and let them handle. it looks SO much better on your part NOT to go off or jump in with customer arguments.

If you really want to piss them off..... Stay in a good mood and keep talking nicely to them. It works.

I usually try my best to make them feel stupid. Try telling them that they're not the only one in the store. If they say to hire more people, tell them that the store is accepting applications. I do keep calm during the situation or even chuckle, I'm not getting worked up over someone whos life is so bad they **** on people working for little to no reason.

"Calm down, or leave." If it continues, "I'm calling the police". Nothing takes the wind out of someones sails like the realization that their argument has zero weight in that you would prefer they weren't a customer at all.

    That doesnt help at times.

Seen customers who've convinced themselves they were being ripped off and wanted law enforcement there to arrest us for ripping them off.

You right. I was store manager for 13 years, and learned that when the manager starts to reflect the bad attitude of a customer, managment just LOST.
