I am going to buy a used engine for my truck. A guy locally has a Jasper engine that supposed to only have 10k miles on it. But I don't know much about Jasper engines.
I know that the rebuilds that are done in Mexico are junk. But I thought Jasper was in the US. So are they any good?
Anyone know?

I got a tranny for my GP from them and haven't had any problems. My friend back in VA works at a ford dealership and that's where they get all their motors and trannys from.

when I worked at the dealer in GA we replaced at least 1 of their garbage engines a week, they are not rebuilds, they will only work the cylinder that is damaged, and leave the rest in, I have seen 1 crank journal with a oversize bearing the rest are factory bearings (different brands and types)

few of the rebuilders actually rebuild them, from looking at the ones sold through the parts stores, advance has a new brand that seems to actually do a true rebuild, and oreillys does also

ive never heard any complaints about jasper...my boss got over 300,000 miles out of one of their trannys in a F 250...that regularly got overloaded with trailer weight

I've been through the Jasper, In engine plant, as well as another up in that part of the country, and am not sure what a rebuild is if that's not what Jasper is doing. From start to finish it's an impressive operation.
One thing that surprised me is that the final builders take the "kits" they get and build from there --- and that they seldom build the same engine type twice is a row. The tranny shops are a little different in that those guys pretty much hammer out whatever it is they are assigned to.
I know the family that runs the place and you couldn't find nicer folks --- and the family aspect trickles across the company.
That said, I've never used one of their products, so I have no first hand knowledge of their stuff.

I know they have been around for quite some time, but yea, never used any of their engines. Can only speak for the tranny side of the house.

Well, picked up the engine on Saturday. Looks like it has more than 10k miles on it. But I will have to see once I get it opened up.

I hope you have good luck with it and being that it has 10K on it should put you in the safe zone. I wouldnt touch one with a 100' stick to be honest. I used to rebuild engines at a local shop and some of the garbage that was seen over the years was rediculous. Just boring out ONE cylinder and using one mismatched piston, and as mentioned above only grinding a few crank journals.... pretty sad but thats how a lot of it is done. I know in recent years things supposedly changed but I still hear lots of horror stories about the engines and transmissions, some guys going through 2-3 of either just to get something that works right. But on the other hand there are those that dont have any trouble at all.

I have heard good, and I have heard bad from them.
I have heard MORE bad than good, so thats my red flag.
I have heard they are only interested in numbers and volume of "rebuilt" motors in, and back out the door, not only in record time, but in record volume as well.
They take short cuts, do sloppy work, and rebuild them wrong more than half the time resulting in failure. Jasper's reps are pretty bad about taking responsibility on the failure, they like to blame the owner of the vehicle to the shop operator for doing the installment "wrong" resulting in the failure. Only when people called B.S. on them, and took the motors apart, thats when people started noticing how bad of a job was done on the rebuild.
I have heard mis matched bearings...used parts reused that shouldn't be etc. were found inside on tear down. The shops then call Jasper back, they send a rep out, and then maaaaaaaaaaaaybe Jasper will warranty out the motor after they look inside. But I bet they try to say to the shops "Well you must of put in those parts cause we didn't".

There was a local guy probably 5-6 years ago that ordered a 4.3 for his 91 S10 and when they delivered the engine to the shop it was laying on its side in the Jasper delivery truck, one broken valve cover and two rocker arms trashed. They told him just to take those parts off of his old engine and put them on the new one! He unquestionably declined and ended up having a local shop rebuild his engine
