One of my turbo books talks about this, and even some Ford Diesel trucks run into this and the compressor wheel just explodes and sometimes guys get lucky and find it in the air filter box lol. If the compressor surges or the wheel hits a stall point it puts a lot of stress on the fins. It didnt look like the fines were digging into the housing but is hard to tell. I have seen turbos with a bad floating type bearing and the wheel just grinds into the housing and wears down the fins but I dont know about the way this one looks.
