I'm all for doing stuff yourself, but tint plays a big part in your car's appearance. Amateur jobs make your whole car look... well... amateur.
So you had a shop do all you mods?

If you slap the tint on, outside, without cleaning, sure. But if you take your time, wash the windows well before hand, taking it slowly, you'd do fine. That's how the shops do it. I had a shop put tint on my Impala, and THEY scratched it putting it on, admitting it, but not taking the time right then to fix it. I have to go back again to get them to fix it. I should HAVE to take it back - they should have taken it off and done it right the first time.

I got a place down the road to only wants 160 all the way around. Normally they cut deals if you make an appointment. I asked what he could do for me if i just brought my GT and my 2000 Montana up there, to tint the fronts cuase they have factory tint in rear. But he said "just bring it up ill throw it in."
SWEET. now it gets the wife off my back....

And 9 times out of 10, this is the result of using the rear window defroster. Some people get lucky and it doesn't bother the tint, others get bubbles from it heating up the adhessive. Or the person putting it in didn't have much practice doing it. The way I feel, if you don't want to learn how tto do it, take it to a shop. If you want to save yourself some money, practice on your own. Everyone has their own personnal preferance. Like Dee said, do you take your car to the shop to get all your mods put on.

no, i don't, but i know what cheap tint looks like, so i went with a shop.
it doesn't matter how good you do it yourself, if it is cheap tint, it WILL look like ass eventually
i have llumar on mine, 5% shop did it perfect, in less than an hour. rear defrost works with no issues.
besides, 120 bucks isn't really worth my time in doing it myself.
120 bucks meant no "trial and error" and i can bring it back to them IF anything should go wrong with the tint...
to each their own i guess.

I've seen professional tint that looks like ass, too. The only tint I that never looks bad to me is factory tint. So if I used Llmar myself, would your brain explode? "It's good tint, but you did it yourself. AHHHH!" The tint I'm buying is lifetime guaranteed as well, I"m just doing it myself.

I'm afraid I could talk until I"m blue in the face. Ten years from now, if I had tint that went bad, sure enough someone would say, "See I told you!" I've got tint installed and paid for it, but I want to give the DIY a shot. And I'm not very impressed with their install either, yet another reason why the pros aren't always going to do it right.

nah, if you do a good job i will congratulate you on it, if it holds up, then great.. only thing i'm saying is that cheap tint will end up with a cheap look.. and from what i've seen, parts stores generally only stock cheap stuff.
nowhere have i said not to do it yourself, i just said cheap tint looks like ass.

Well, there's the big thing. How long is long enough to convince someone? Obviously, if it starts bubbling in weeks, it's ass. But say you get 5-6 years out of DIY. I'd say you've done good. $35 shipped for my GP tint, and I don't think I'll have the car for more than 5-6 years anyway. So if the tint outlasts the car, I'll be ordering a DIY set for the replacement vehicle.

if it lasts more than 5 years i will be genuinely impressed.
for me, i expect tint to last 5 years, just because you can't predict everything that will or could go wrong. even a lifetime will have problems
i haven't had a problem yet with any car, but i don't usually keep them more than 2 years
for me, 120 over five years is nothing, so i don't mind the cost at all, i barely even notice it gone the first time.
my friends have done the diy tint, usually the **** from lordco or autozone, and it always turns out like ass, no matter how hard they try. maybe they just suck at it and the tint is horrible... heh

again, if it stays shades of black and lasts 5 years, then great, just most diy tint ends up purple and bubbled.

i would really love to be proved wrong on this one, i stay away from diy tint, i don't think doing it will be hard, i think finding a tint that will last is the hard part.

I did my moms truck back in 98 and it still looks as good as the day I did it. And that tint was from Advance auto. Most tint turns purple if you use a cleaner that has ammonia in it over a period of time. Had my GTP done in 99 by a shop and within a year or so, it was starting to bubble. Have done all my own tint sense then and have had no problems out of it. The problem with "cheap tint" is that it is thicker than what you would get at a shop so it is harder to work with. The tint that myself and Deezul are talking about is actually coming from a shop, we're just doing the install ourselves. It all boils down to if you want to take the time to do something yourself and learn something new, or just pay someone the extra money to do it for you.

Here in Canada I'm having a hard finding a shop that will do my 04 GTP. they all start at $200.00 + The guy for $200.00 dosen't even have a shop he does it outside in the drive way. Of course im 2hrs + from a big city, that don't help much.
i never heard of getting it from E-bay pre cut. I think i will try that. I use to do tinting 15 years ago but always had issues with the rear windows.

When u get it from E-bay is the rear window tint one peice?

If you can find a heat gun, you can get some for about 20 bucks, Lay the tint on the outsid of the rear window, making sure it is facing adhessive side out and go over it lightly with the heat gun. This will cause it to form to the rear window so when you put it in it will be alot easier. Once in, hit the outside of the rear window with the heat gun and it will help stick better. Do you get what I am saying. Hard to explain. If you used to do it, you shouldn't have any problems. It's kinda like riding a bike. You might be a little shakey at first from not doing it in a while, but you get the hang of it again. I would just start with the easy windows first to ge a little practice in and then work your way to the hardest. That way once you get to that point, you should have the feel for it again. Good luck with it man. Just take your time and don't get discouraged.

Got the tint, still haven't had a chance to install it. Might be able to do it this weekend, but if not then it won't be for a while. Whenever I do get it done, I will post my thoughts. I got three sets, one for a Mustang, one for a Grand Prix, and one for my F150. I only have to do the front doors on the F150, so I'll test it on them.

Have you had a chance to look at the tint yet. Getting ready to order some in the next day or two. Talked with the guy via email and said if there were any problems to let them know and they would resolve it. So they seem pretty good so far.

The tint looks like it comes off a machine in a big roll and has each window piece pre cut with scored lines. The seller then cuts the individual pieces from the large roll into each individual window. It looks like the same tint as what is on my Impala, which was done professionally.
