The people who keep arguing PEMDAS to get 2 as an answer need to actually google the term and it will show them that they are in fact wrong.
The acronym is BEDMAS
Brackets
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Add
Subtract
I'm 22 and I got 288.
48/2(9+3)
48/2*12
24*12
288
16
288
like stealthe said multiplication and division have the same precedence, hence, you do them from left to right...you dont multiply 2 by 12 because you have to divide 48 by 2 first.
you can not argue agaisnt the rules of math...thats one of the reasons i love it
Age 24, and its 288 if you follow BODMAS or PEDMAS. I believe the answer would be 2 if you had extra parenthesis around the denominator (ie. 48/(2(9+3)).
First off.... I havent see the division symbol since grade 6.
Its been like this:
48
_________
2(9+3)
From what I'm gathering it depends on how you look at it. I've came to the conclusion that both are right and exceptable answers depending on the form of math required.
If you're working distribution I see it as
48 ÷ 2(9+3) so
48 ÷ ((9*2)+(3*2)) then
48 ÷ (18+6) then
48 ÷ 24 equals
2
But conventional BEDMAS says
48÷2(9+3) so
48÷2*(12)
(48÷2)*(12)
24*12
288
There is only one correct way.
19 and I didnt do the problem. So I win.
I spent 5 mins trying to figure out where you fit your age into the equation. I fail.
Already been here, done this.
48÷2(9+3) = ? - OwnagePranks Forum
There are about a kajillion posts in there so I'll condense it.
Basically it's a ****ty problem. It can go either way. The notation is bad and therefore it could be 288 or 2. Using PEMDAS/BEMDAS whatever you call it, multiplications and division are on par with each other, as are addition and subtraction, so when it comes to those, it goes from left to right, not necessarily multiplication before division.
NOW, if you distribute the 2 into the parentheses, which you may do, you'll get 2, but if you do NOT distribute, by order of P/BEMDAS, you should get 288.
So what it really comes down to is notation. If they answer they were looking for was 2, it should've been 48/(2(9+3))
And if they were looking for 288 the notation should've been
(48/2)(9+3).
That's the "answer", there is nothing left to say about this. You can argue with me, but that would make you a dumbass.
Edit: Also for the acronyms, PEMDAS, BEMDAS, PEDMAS, BEDMAS, they're all correct. The way they teach it around here is "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" and seeing as it's taught all these different ways only reinforces the fact that division and multiplication are on part with each other.
if we agree with you does it make us a dumbass? lol
