Ok so I'm figuring the two possible answers will be based on your age and how you were taught, newer verses older. I'm 23 and got 2 but both my parents are 56 and get an answer of 288. So post your age then answer
Age 23
Answer 2

Answer 2
age: 19
answer: 48/24 -> 2/1 -> 2
What they don't see is that there is essentially a multiplication sign between the 2 and the bracket.

About.com also agrees with me

If you were "taught" differently then your teachers are idiots.
age: 20
48 / 24 = 2.
^ know your principles. Parenthesis first, multiplication, then divide. Answer is 2
i fubared. miltiply/divide you go left to right. so 288 is right.
Please Excuse My Deal Aunt Sally
The only way the answer is 2 is if the equation was written like this
48 ÷ (2(9+3))
As its written it is 288.
I thought he was gonna use teh ruler!
The way it's written is 48 divided by 2(12)
No its not.
Parenthesis are done first
9+3=12
Then you do division
48÷2=24
Then you do multiplication
24 x 12 = 288
Follow the rules. The 2 is outside of the parenthesis. It has nothing to do with it.
Again the only way the answer is 2 is if its written 48 ÷ (2(9+3))
Use the Google calculator. It will tell you the answers.
I was always taught multiplication before division
Thats wrong.
You multiply and divide in the order they occur from left to right.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&b...f&aqi=&aql=&oq=
421,000 results saying you multiply and divide in the order they occur.
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/orderops.htm
Put the formula in Excel. It also gives 288.
Every possible calculator gives 288 as an answer. Order of operations rules makes it 288. The answer is and always will be 288.

Muliplication and Division have the SAME precendence.
Addition and Subtraction have the SAME precendence.
LEARN THE RULES OF MATH PEOPLE.
Look at the links I posted. They are done in the ORDER THEY OCCUR FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.
PEMDAS made the youth of America stupid.
Our own version of Smarter Than a Fifth Grader!!!!!!!!
YouTube - Europe is a country and everyone speaks french there
The people who keep arguing PEMDAS to get 2 as an answer need to actually google the term and it will show them that they are in fact wrong.
