driving home from work i saw an old friend for sale... 96 chevy 3/4 ton( heavy half) 2wd 350 vortec. 2k and its mine. well ive been pondering sellin the gp mainly because i just dont have the time to keep up with the maintenance and the truck was always one of those tough dont care if i scratch it kinda vehicles. plus it can hold its own against the gp. well if i get what i want outta the gp im gonna throw in an old carb 383 stroker and turbo350 tranny and maybe get to know this old ****. im not familiar with carb motors so itll be fun i guess.

im pretty sure the 96 trucks came with a throttle body not a carb, it sits in place of the carb, and looks like one, tbi (throttle body injection) and i'd use a th400 trans vs a 350, its stronger. if you got a 350 trans then use it, but if you need to shop for one go for a 400. my 97 had the 4L80E is based on a THM400 with an internal overdrive, and it took everything i threw at it.

96 vortecs use the spider injection not tbi. i may have come across as someone who knows nothing about the sbc in the previous post but im very familiar with all the old school stuff ive just never messed with the carb stuff just FI. im well aware of what needs to be done to put a carb motor in the 96.

carbs are easy to deal with, if you go through with it let us know how it all worked out.

yeah i figured it would. ive just never been familiar with the anatomy of the carb. and ive never really had to dial in an old distributor...lol ive always messed with coil on plug. 4x4 is pretty much useless unless i have the desire to climb rocks or drive in 3 feet of crap. it has posi with 373s in it and i never had a problem gettin around even in the muddy and snowy corn fields. besides most 4x4s are still 2 tire fire on thr right side anyway. anyway when im done i can at least have a decent beater truck with bout 420hp. definitley be a sleeper.

nothing really. its mostly gonna be just payload hauling on occassion. if i did pull anything id be small stuff. technically it is a half ton... heavy half. its got 3/4 drivetrain but only weighs 4100lbs gross. its got mix of half and 3/4 ton parts. i delt with this before when i had it. mainly its just a fun work truck with a little balls. im not in the market for a truck i just want this one back because i know where its been and what condition its in

yes, no. there's a transmission section down the home page a little if you have anymore questions.
    /threadjack.

anyways, i just bought an s-10 with a carb'd 350/th350 and i love it to death. i know absolutely nothing about carbs, but it's a trip getting used to driving it. it'll bog down, choke out, shift orgasmically hard, and can't keep tires hooked up. fun little toy it has the HEI ignition system too, putting it somewhere between 1973-76 i believe, with the oil dipstick on the passenger side. i say go for it, those old trucks are sweet
