Not sure if this is in the right section but oh well
I just moved to a small town in TN. Our TV/internet/phone provider routes their services through cat5 cable in the house. They call it IPTV for those that know. They use DSL Modem/Router combo units(2 of them) and have split the signal up into the different lines running to the rooms for TV. The routers are located beside my desktop. This is the first time I have used this type of service and I have always used cable.

Anyway, I noticed the other night that the TV signal was breaking up badly much like satellite does when bad weather comes through. I said oh well, I will go play a game on the PC. I turn my rig on and then when I turn my speakers on all of a sudden i hear what you would call radio communications. Sounds like its CB, 2-way, or something of the sort. I never dealt with that stuff before so I don't know exactly how it works. So as I was sitting here listening to this guy talk I noticed that every time I would I hear him talk is when the TV image would distort. The catch is that I could not hear him through the TV but only on my computer speakers or headphones.

I have contacted our service provider and so far I have gotten we have had this happen before type deal. They are coming out Thurs or Fri to check it out but I do not think they will hear anything because it seems to only happen in the evening. It also seems to be the same person every time. Has anyone ever dealth with this type of thing before? I was gonna suggest they install filters on the lines but I'm not even sure if that even exsists. Anyway, thanks for looking

You have a neighbor with a Ham or CB radio. Most likely he is using a "kicker" (amp) or either your wires are not grounded properly. Ask the technician to check SNR (Signal to Noise) and try to eliminate any bad premise wiring.

I hear this all the time as well, (I work with cable providers all across the country...) I would classify this as RF interference. Also, look for big-ass antennas on your neighbor houses. That will help you determine the jack-ass.

Sometimes bad surge protectors and line splitters can cause the issue.

I kinda figured that I had one that was using some extra power. The only problem is that lots of people on this street are old and from what I can see almost have antennas. I will inspect a bit better this weekend and see if I can spot one. Hopefully when they come out Thurs or Fri to check things they can resolve issues there.

Is the SNR test something that would have done when they hooked everything up? This is a new house and all the wires were ran about a year ago and when consruction was completed they hooked them all up about three weeks ago.

@Stunt0Rider - LOL, at least that would be something somewhat useful. This guy was playing all kinds of sound file off the net or something. The Pop-eye theme, peanut butter jelly time song, and something that sounded like a porno....

So... it's a 17-yr-old male. Unlikely to have a transmission license. Record it and email the FCC. EB - AMATEUR RADIO COMPLAINTS
