When I replaced the LIM gasket yesterday, it took me 18hrs! (well 4hrs break, 4 hours due to meticulous cleaning, and doing it in the driveway where it's 25 deg and windy, first time LIM for me.) I took alot of pictures, but I thought I would share some of what I found...

    First, the injectors were filthy!

Next, even though this pic is a little blurry, you can see where this gasket is full of FAIL! (even missing chunks...geez)

and now after replacing w/ a new aluminum one

ok, heres an injector hole and valve cover in back(thats a "white" valve cover)

and after cleaning/reinstall new gaskets, the same injector hole...

From now on I'm definitely going to keep my engine clean and degreased! Oil+dirt+sand=YUK!

I am wondering though, I haven't had my engine cover on for over a year, would having it off increase the amount of dirt that gets in all over the place?

My advice is if you're going to do this yourself, make sure you have an extra vacuum line + Ts, they're gonna break. Degrease and clean the darn thing BEFORE you start.

tell me about it!! i had to replace my engine b/c of improper maintenance. mine looks 1000X better than when i first got it. i change the oil religiously and i baby it for the most part.
i buy it everything under the sun. it gets new parts and things all the time. folks think im crazy but i NEED a project and something to do. might as well put it into something positive.

Lol yup. I just wish I had more money to put into it. It needs struts and I really want to put an HV3 in it and get a tune. Everytime I work on the damn thing though I come out with hands cut to pieces and it's so sensitive that the simplest job becomes the biggest most complicated problem.

yeah that's what i tell people it's not the car or the engine, it's the little stuff that GM put with it. like plastic UIM, poor electronics, etc.
but since it wants to be a sensitive little whore i curse at it. but only i can do it. lol

Actually it was from reading your safely modding thread that made me realize I had to do this in the first place. So thanks to you, and Mr DuBob for the vid!

Yikes I wonder if my engine is that dirty....my front valvecover USED to be dirty....not a spec of dirt on it now. I never looked down by the injectors or anything though.

If you've had leaky valve covers, more than likely dirts gonna stick to the oil and create goo. By the way, the part of the LIM next to the T-stat with the bolt down inside, well that was covered in about an inch of oily crud including a small piece of dried out french bread.. I have NO idea how that got in there, or WHEN
