i think it should be a law in which a fine can only be imposed if the driver already did something to warrant getting flicked. not wearing a seatbelt shouldn't be reason enough to pull someone over, but if they get into an accident/any other moving violation, then the seat belt law should be able to come into play.

i don't think it's right that there's "seat belt zones" where the fines double and all that bs either.

the belt is on before the car even gets started. i catch myself putting the damn thing on just moving the car from the street to the garage lol.

the seatbelt law should be to each their own. although i will sue a mother f*cker if a body comes thru my windshield.

Hope that is simple enough to understand.

Same as not wearing a helmet on a bike. That's fine if you don't want too, but you should have to forfeit your insurance coverage on yourself and pay higher rates.

Wear your seatbelt. Babies do it without crying.
Point taken. Now let's ban McDonalds and all the other fast food joints because they cause health problems = more medical treatment needed = higher insurance rates. Might as well make that all food that is unhealthy. Government mandated vegan diets for all! Let's also ban fireplaces. Fireplaces = higher chance of fire = more money paid out in fire claims = higher insurance rates. Let's hurry and ban skydiving, bungie jumping, motocross, racing, etc., etc. since they also fall into your category of higher chance of death = higher insurance rates. Where do you draw the line with the arguement being higher insurance rates affect us all so a law needs to ban it? You're right about it being simple to understand. I don't want to live my life in a padded room so as not to take any risk whatsoever and affect insurance rates.

I agree that wearing a seatbelt is a good idea and the smart thing to do, but the point of this thread was should it be law. My answer to that is no. There are a lot of things that are the smart, safe thing to do, but this is supposed to be a free country. People do stupid things everyday and put themselves at greater risk than not wearing a seatbelt without breaking any laws.

that's kind of a harsh statement. although i do believe we should get rid of half the world and be a whole lot better off, i don't think we should make the call by seatbelts. accidents happen and people die, it's the nature of the beast. cars place people in danger, i'd feel much more safe if we instituted more driving exams to get the d-bags that almost kill me twice a day on my 12 minute drive to work off the road.

the simple fact is that i don't like wearing it. and i know it's against the law, and i honestly told the cop that's why i wasn't wearing it. he thanked me for my honesty, gave me a warning on speed because i hadn't ever been in the area before, wrote me up on the seatbelt, and i signed it with no protest. my opinion is that it's a choice, and should be treated as such. i shouldn't be fined for feeling more comfortable in my driver's seat.

for all of you who says it only hurts yourselves...well if you have kids or heck even your parents and they die from a car crash and didnt have seat belts on, pretty sure youll be hurtin worse than any crash can do to you! ive been in one crash with it off with my dad and we each got lucky, just a gash in my head and knee and my dad just sprained his neck and back. but seeing my whole face bleeding and him in such pain made each of us decide to wear seatbelts from then on. easy to see how many of you just think of yourselves on here. but maybe after enough $80+ tickets youll get the message! they are doing it for you not for the money. you know its free to wear it! not so much as if you get caught without it. but...after being here in the shadows and reading all the posts from alot of you i can see not alot will make you change your minds. maybe the death of a loved one without it on....but i dont wish that on any of you.. just saying, do you really want to put your families through that?

Trust me, if you teach your children to wear seatbelts now, it will be second nature to them when they are old enough to drive. Yes, there are a lot of stupid, restrictive, draconian laws, but wearing a seatbelt should be common sense.

I AGREE!!! If you know anything about Physics, it takes 4 times the amount of force to stop a moving object. Just think if you were driving 100 MPH!

Some laws are BS, but this is a law that I think helps.

once again, it is a known fact that seatbelts save lives. what's your guys' opinions on the ethics of forcing people to take measures to protect themselves?

Actually, I do know something about physics and your statement is not entirely true. The force required to stop an object in motion is dependant upon how fast you want to stop it. You can stop a car with one ounce of force, but it will take a long, long time. For a car to stop instantly like when hitting a solid concrete wall would cause the wall to absorb a tremendous amount of force. Far greater than 4 times the mass of the object in motion. Physics is irrelevant to the original point of this thread though. The op is not asking if you think seatbelts are safe or if you should wear them. The op is asking for opinions about it being a law to wear them.
