    So.

Just wondering everyone's outlook on the "Seat Belt" Law.

I personally believe it should be YOUR choice, whether you want to wear one or not.

Honestly, who are you hurting, besides yourself?

Why is it OK to smoke, but not OK to not wear a seat belt?

There's a bunch of things that are legal, that effect / hurt others, but yet it's illegal to not wear your seat belt?

I don't understand it, so just wondering everyone else thoughts.

I wear mine MOST of the time, but have heard, over the years, about people who have been trapped in their vehicles by their seat belts jamming up upon impact.

i think you're a complete idiot if you don't wear one, but due to the mindset of survival of the fittest, I don't care if you die. Had I not been wearing mine in my first wreck, i definitely would not be in as good of shape as i was. No one rides with me without their seatbelt on.

Race car drivers wear them for a reason. I am a volunteer firefighter, I have seen enough to know, IF you do live your face and head will look great stuck all over the windshield......Not wearing your seat belt is hurting more people than you know.

stupidity. it took more work to disable that than to just pull the damn seat belt over your shoulder

I think it's a bit different from everyday drives, and "Race car drivers"....

No wearing your seat belt causes direct injury to yourself, no one else.

That's just a ignorant statement, so people who "Smoke" or "Drink" must be complete idiot's since there slowing killing themselves, and 2nd hand smoke effects other people..

It's your choice to ride with or without one, and force others who ride with you to wear one.

My simple statement is, it shouldn't be "Illegal" to not wear it.

That's totally not even related. But you're right, smoking is absolutely stupid (though i sympathize with those who actually want to quit). And it's stupid because it's such a simple precaution to prevent yourself from DYING. don't even tell me if you're in a serious wreck that you wouldn't think back and say "Gee, sure wish i was wearing a seatbelt. It would have saved a lot of pain/death." Like I said, if you're stupid enough to drive without one, then the world could do without you.

As far as the law itself goes, it's about 70% the government wants money, 30% someone with influence actually cares.

that's kind of a harsh statement. although i do believe we should get rid of half the world and be a whole lot better off, i don't think we should make the call by seatbelts. accidents happen and people die, it's the nature of the beast. cars place people in danger, i'd feel much more safe if we instituted more driving exams to get the d-bags that almost kill me twice a day on my 12 minute drive to work off the road.

the simple fact is that i don't like wearing it. and i know it's against the law, and i honestly told the cop that's why i wasn't wearing it. he thanked me for my honesty, gave me a warning on speed because i hadn't ever been in the area before, wrote me up on the seatbelt, and i signed it with no protest. my opinion is that it's a choice, and should be treated as such. i shouldn't be fined for feeling more comfortable in my driver's seat.

a racer put it very plainly.

"I will give someone 40 bucks of my own money right now, if you will run face-first into that brick wall, full speed. Your hands must be behind your back. If I see you slow down, turn your head, anything to lighten the impact, you break the deal. Assume someone can run about 15 mph. Would you do that? (no one answers) Then why would you put yourself in the same situation at 5 times that speed?"

I am for seatbelts but against the law itself. Same with helmet laws for motorcycles. I don't want the government meddling in my business. I know that seatbelts and helmets save lives, I don't want to get it trouble if I choose to not wear one. I do think that minors should be required to wear one at all times.
