You aren't gonna get a good condition car (when it's being auctioned due to something like a DUI) for a complete steal, but you can definitely get a better deal than you'll likely find just searching around on craigslist or something.
Bids generally won't go up to retail, because most of the time there's no test driving or anything like that, maybe an inspection period the hour before the auction, but all you can really do is look at it.

Depends on the auction, if this is somewhere that just deals with wrecked/dui/repo'd whatever cars, that's where you're going to find the deals. That's also somewhere you're less likely to run into minimum bids and such..

Now.. if this is one of those "need to liquidate everything" type of advertised auctions, you're basically just going to a used car lot, and just like used car lots you have ones where that have decent prices, and ones that sell way over. So with auctions you might have one that has a $6k book value, and it'll be $4k start bid, with a $6k buyout. Another the book on a car will be $6k in excellent condition, and minimum bid will be $5500 with an $8k buyout.

My friend owns a used car lot and I used to go to the auctions with him to help look at and inspect the cars. One thing for sure, there is alot of JUNK there, all types of cars, and they are the biggest POS, that's why there at the auction. Now, if you go to the auctions that have cars not older than2-3 years old, your doing a little better, but you going to pay top dollar, that's why used cars at the nice dealerships are so expensive, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Also, cars that have been run through the auction a couple time have dings, dents, and wear from just being in the atmosphere of the auction from all the other cars, they are packed like sardines, and alot of little things happen, broken knobs, little door dings, torn off trim.
Remeber, the volume of the cars there are cars nobody wants.
Be carful, and inspect closley. People do anything to a car just to get it through the auction and into somonelses hands.

I personally like Auto auctions .... if you know what you are looking at you can get some great deals .... but almost guarenteed what you buy will need work... I got a 2000 Bonneville SE out of an auction for $875 a few years ago with 131k on the clock and while I saw it need needed a LIM job done... when I drove it home that night found it needed hub bearings really bad .... I ended up putting about $400-500 in parts into it to get the car running right . but however the point I am trying to make is for the total of about $1400 had a really sweet Bonneville that booked for $3000 lol
