Mods

So as some of you may know, I'm not exactly mechanically inclined. I've been on these forums for a long time, but I still don't understand a lot about the different mods people put on their cars. Downpipes, headers, air intakes, I've read the safely modding your car thread which explains a bit about different mods, but from what I've read it doesn't seem to explain exactly what it is they do. For example I know what an air intake looks like, and my guess would be it helps cool the engine by filtering extra air and cooling it. But again that's just my guess.

Is there any decent resource for learning about common mods and what they do, and the expected result?

i suggest you using the new technology just invented: google

lean about motors and then re-read that thread. it will make WAY more sense why you should do these things.

If you don't have any general car knowledge, you shouldn't be modding at all.

^ true story! Have someone that knows what they are doing do it for you if you really want to mod. Or atleast have them guide you through an help you out so you don't **** anything up.

I have read the thread. Also, I'm not going to be modding anytime soon. I have a thread in the General Tech section about my situation. Basically I have almost no experience with cars, but a few months ago I bought an extremely cheap $500 GP. Naturally it has tons of problems, and I'm using this as an experience to learn more about cars. There's still plenty more work to be done, and a lot more for me to learn. When I do have the money to get it in decent shape I am going to start modding it if for no other reason than to learn how. I will never pay someone else to do work on it just because it would defeat the whole purpose.

I did try Google and found some info, just thought I'd see if anyone had any better resources for someone who wants to learn more.

Thanks for those who did offer suggestions.

Basically your motor is a huge air pump. The air intake, headers or Downpipe/Plog all help air flow either into or out of your motor. This makes your motor more efficient and allows more air in and out which means more power.

Where in Mass are you located? Some people learn from reading, some from pictures and some from doing/experiencing.

I'm in Enfield. There's always some project or work to be done in the garaage with performance parts/stock parts laying around to look at and better understand how/why mods are done. If you are looking for some real life, parts in hand knowledge and learning, let me know. I'll show you the mods and the reasons why we do them.

This weekend is Headers
During the week will be transmission reassembly, mating to engine and engine/trans install
Soon after transmission swapping.
Then another trans swap.
A trans go through and check up. Then swap
Sway bar swap out.

You name it. There is literally always something happening. If you want to learn mods, learn how to work on the car or just hang out, the offer is pretty much wide open to folks all the time.

Thanks Bill, that's a tempting offer but unfortunately I'm not in Mass anymore. I bought my 97 GP in Mass and drove it cross country to Vegas which is where I'm at now. Maybe next time I'm in MA I'll take you up on that offer.
