    What did you think?

Overall, I think he said lot more good than bad. There are still a lot of details to be worked out, and I think he was overoptimistic about the savings from reducing inefficiency. We'll see what Congress does in the next few weeks.

I was, more than anything, sorely disappointed with the Republican response. I'd like to see a truly bipartisan bill, but the utter failure of the Republican party to compromise makes that unlikely.

Great speech. As a Canadian I hope that you guys get this bill passed through and stop listening to the Republican shills on Fox News.

The Republican response was a joke. The guy has been sued three times for malpractice. Great vetting.

*Disclaimer* Don't read this is you love governments.Or are sovereign.

The governments, and I mean all of them are corrupt I am not picking on the united states. But Obama is nothing, all your change all your BS no one realizes it doesn't matter whether you vote republican or democrat you are just voting in another power elites puppet. It doesn't matter what he said or didn't say whatever is status quo is going to stay that way and any "change" is going to make more money for the power elite of the world.

(I will go into further detail if people want)

Effing right man, Obama makes no decisions and neither does his Cabinets. And did all of you know that income tax is a useless tax? Or how about that 60% of the worlds money is owned by 6% of the population and privatized banks were the worst idea ever and that is what started all of this? Or how about as long as "America" is borrowing money you all will be in debt for the rest of your lives but none of us will ever see the day when we are all truly free in fact quite the opposite.

I'm not a big government supporter, nor am I a big Obama supporter. I don't believe that government has my best interest at heart. I do, however, believe that an educated constituency (which is something we sorely lack in the USA) is essential to making it in their best interests to represent ours.

Consequently, I prefer to discuss and support ideas over people. Most of the ideas brought up will protect patients' rights, make healthcare more accessible, and may (here's mainly where I'm unconvinced) reduce costs.

This isn't a certain other GP forum. Let's try to have a civil discussion on the actual points in Obama's speech or the mechanics of the many bills floating around Congress. The current system is broken. Government played a large part in driving up costs in the last century, but it's not possible to simply turn back the clock. Ignoring the problem won't fix it, nor will ad hominem attacks, straw men, and just plain nonsense.

I'm all for reforming a ridiculous health care system, but anyone who thinks a government run health care system is a good idea has their head up their ass. Been to the DMV lately? I have many Canadian friends who tell me what a bad idea it is. That and their socialized vehicle insurance system. Look into it... not good.

Unfortunately, you already pay for illegals (and anybody else without insurance) when they go to the ER. I wish it would change, but it's not going to.

Obama stated his plan, but it's up to Congress to pass the bill. Unfortunately, I also believe that the part about not covering illegals, and the part about the government option (if there is one) being self-sustaining will be left out of the final bill.

Who do we blame for that? Obama doesn't vote, so he really has little control over what they give him to sign. The Democrats need to say they passed healthcare reform before the 2010 elections, so he's not going to veto any bill they give him.

Its up to the Republicans to negotiate to keep these things in the bill. Unfortunately, most of them are too busy fearmongering and disrespecting the President (completely unbecoming a member of Congress, IMO).

Obama's plan isn't a government run healthcare system. There is a universal single-payer bill in Congress (HR 676), but it's been reintroduced for years and has never passed.

Obama wants the public option, but many Congressional Democrats don't. If it is in the final bill, he wants it to be a small plan competing with private insurance, and not be mandatory (supposedly). He also stated that it would be required to be self-sustaining, but I doubt that will make it into the final bill.

i work at a hospital in a cardiac intensive care unit, and i have to be honest.. im not looking forward to this bill. i do not think that gov run healthcare is a good idea and i think that the medical field will suffer greatly form this.. not only in the care received but also in the loss of the research going on etc
    i knew this guy wasn't b/sing.

x2. The President is in the public eye, so he's easy to blame, but it's Congres who passes the laws and approves the budget. If we want real change, we have to start by replacing our Congressmen (preferably with anyone who has neither a D nor an R after their name).
