Okay, so I'm 18 and my dad still helps me out a lot with the whole buying/selling aspect with vehicles. He's always been a "car guy". He's pretty stubborn and everything, which is why I need some help.

As of now, I have a white 02 gt. I bought it when I didn't know much about prixs, and now I kinda want a gtp. My gt doesn't have a whole lot of options (cloth interior, no hud, standard dic, etc.). It had 42k miles on it when I bought it earlier this year and now it has almost 48k. I paid somewhere around 6800 for it from a dealership. (Still can't decide I got ripped off or not)

I found a black 99 gtp close to where I live with just under the mileage that I have on my gt now (47,500ish), loaded with leather, hud, perf. shift (not sure if this was standard on gtps in 97-00), the digital dic, etc. It was advertised on autotrader for $6995. I imagine I could get them down to 6k or so. It seems like a decent deal compared to what my gt went for...

I was thinking about trying to sell my gt and pick up the gtp and break even or maybe make a little in the transaction if I sold it outright.

I just mentioned the thought of it to my dad and he kinda looked at me like I was crazy. First of all, I can't use the fact that it's supercharged as a main reason. I just got a speeding ticket about a month and a half ago. He also wouldn't want to see me getting it because it's black, and therefore hard to keep clean. He also hates the idea because he figures he's going to have to do most of the work selling it and everything (which I could do almost all of).

There's practically no difference between the 99 and the 02, right? I mean, since they're so close, all it is is mileage that is taken into account for the most part, and the mileage is practically the same.

Ok, it's late. I'm probably rambling. ANYWAY... So what kind of points can you think of that I could try to convince him into letting me trade in my white gt (which he thinks is really nice, and still, so do I) for a *black* *supercharged* version of the same car? Or do you honestly think I should just keep my gt?

Sorry for my novel of a post and all of the parenthesis.

Sounds like a sweet deal, I'd get the GTP.
Try all the other options it has, tell him you just want all the other things mentioned like the HUD, leather, etc.

You're 18. You can do it all yourself like a big boy can't you?

Is the car under your or your dads name?

Oh man sounds like my dad Well you could start with all the features that the GTP has the the GT doesn't and that it would probably be almost like a trade for a better equiped car. Oh and I forgot alot of begging .

Naw, don't. Keep it. It's a good first car. Just start Modding it. Sounds like a good canvas to start painting on. Just little stuff. A FWI or cold air box.. U bend delete. Wheels. Get a tuner. Learn about it the car. Then maybe a top swap :-P

Life ain't about driving places. It's about getting there 2 seconds faster because you spent 6 months learning how to get the car to do more.

you would be a crazy fool to trade that in, a white coupe...

    48k? damn!

If you don't like not having an s/c...do a top-swap. Imo every GP with a roots blower should have an L36/26.

Well the first thing you have to realize is that your going to be paying more money for the trade and more money on insurance. They both sound like nice cars, the hardest part would be finding a buyer for the GT. The GTP would be a nice upgrade, but you can get most of those upgrades for the GT. The interiors can be switched out fairly quickly and you can usually find a good deal. You can also do a topswap on the GT, basically taking the s/c pulleys/heads/lim/supercharger/vac lines from the GTP. There are writeups for this stuff in the how-to sections or do a search. I would just put the GT for sale and if anyone comes soon with the money you want, sell it. If the GTP gets sold in the meantime, keep the GT.

You can get leather seats from a junk yard or ebay pretty cheap too.
Plus others mentioned you will be raped with the insurance spike.
Keep your GT and mod it to a nice sleeper.

I say keep it. Good miles, you can turn it into a GTP with a top-swap and not worry about insurance rates jumping. Put some new-gen GP leather seats in there and you're already miles ahead with the interior. You can install a HUD if you want. Yours is also 3 years newer and there for has 3 years better technology (there are small things they change year to year). You can turn into a GT-gone-GTP or leave the exterior alone and use it as a sleeper, raping all your victims faces with total confusion. =]

Sounds like my old man lol. I would have the gtp checked out very well, look for any signs of accidents (on my new 07 I noticed after I got home a hit in the rear light, not bad by any means it is all good, fixed up but I KNOW it is there now) Try this, just to see if it works. I had a 05 crapali errr cavalier base, man trans, no air, 57.xxx kms on the odo. I saw an 02 Taurus se power everything with 120,000 kms for around what the cavalier was worth (this is nearly a year ago) and offered a straight trade no money down. Well, after some talking and specifying I had no money to offer I drove off the lot in the Taurus. Some think I was had, I am a car guy and I feel I got the deal. Anyway, I did that on my own, it was one sat so no one was told about it. I know it was a long shot but ur car is newer, wich I think makes it easier to sell, so give that a shot. Worst thing the sales guy can do (and the first guy did that to me) is say NO deal. Like I said long shot but it could happen. And if it does then drive up and show ur dad. He does help u and mine helps me but at some point u will have to make decisions like this by urself, and if the odd chance the trade works then no money was excahanged then ur dad can't get to upset at that ;-)

Unless the car is in your dad's name. I couldn't do that for this very reason.

Eh, I could do everything myself, but I respect him and would like his blessing, if you will, on doing something big like this. The car is under both of our names, which is also another reason.

First off, it's not my first car. I plan on keeping it a very long time, which means low miles is key. Also, I feel I know a good bit about the sixth gen gps. If I keep it, I only want to do small things that can help gas mileage and give small performance gains (would plan on a fwi, exhaust, dp, pcm), but since it's a gt, I wouldn't ever want to do anything major with it. Top swap is almost out of the question, since it would be somewhat expensive and the parts would probably be hard to find around where I live. The downtime and the fact that I don't have a ton of mechanical experience would also be a slight problem.

I have an album up of it. It's also the one in my avatar.

Yeah, I could try that... But yeah, I wouldn't do it without my dad's consent, not only because his name is on the title, too, but just kind of out of respect. I don't know... I could do a top swap and get leather seats/hud/etc. but that would end up costing a lot, and I don't want to hack anything up too bad... I was planning on keeping the gp for a long time as my dd, then getting a trans am as a "nice day" car (originally thinking a 2nd gen, 70-76 with a 455+4spd, but now I'm kinda teasing the idea of a newer one, because it's newer and would have better support...). I'm still in college so I don't know if I want to just wait for that good deal on a T/A, or would want to mod the dd, which leads me towards a gtp. Maybe I just think about things a little too much.

Every day i see L67 parts in the f/s section. These parts can be had so cheap, if you just look around.

Some reading goes along way. A top-swap really isn't hard to do. I did mine on my rock driveway outside in a couple days.

It's hard when you don't know anythig about engine work. That's the only reason I'm still N/A
