That is a huge difference in comparison though. I never really tied Knight Rider to the Pontiac per se, it was more about the performance and coolness of the car. Any of the American muscle cars could have been the first KITT. Was smart of GM and the entertainment business to piggyback on the Smokey and the Bandit success.
see, while the original KITT was a pontiac, it didnt seem like the whole show was a commercial. this go-round, just about everywhere you look, oh hey theres a new ford they're drivin. it was just a little much...
i can see the point about the transformer movie and gm... but that was a movie. the knight rider "movie" was supposed to be a pilot for a tv show. if the show ends up like that, it'll be a joke. (if it isnt already)
heh
Ok lets look at what you have suggested.
1. Using the Pontiac GTO. That current production line is Dead. Why have a dead car that no one would likely recognize and maybe want to check out at a dealership?
2. Using the Pontiac G8. Still not fully in production or really even on the showroom floors, just a car being driven around the car show circuit currently. And its a Four Door as compared to the 2dr Mustang and over TA used in the first run of KR.
In my opinion in that regards is simple. They went with the current most popular and most recognized car out there. The Mustang. As much as I would love to see a Pontiac Trans Am in the show, The newest one would be what? 2002/2003? So why would they want to put a car up there that is no longer in production?
Granted it would be of a purest view to have another Pontiac in the show, but they were filming and making this movie to what people know now. And unfortuately its only the Mustang currently.
Smokey and the Bandit got me hooked on Pontiac, Knight rider strengthened it LOL. 5 T/As later, a a bunch of other GM rides, No regrets. I had a hard time watching the mustang play Kitt. Just wasnt the same. I agree it would be like bringing back the Dukes in a mustang. Or The bandit in a mustang. Just isnt right. How about starsky and hutch in a mustang? Just isnt right. The show was a tragedy. Maybe this is why GMs sales are in the tank for performance cars. Ford promotes the heck out of the mustang. Besides the transformers what does GM do to promote sports cars? Oh and transformers featured vehicles not even in full production. Think about all the old shows with GM vehicles, Knight rider, Smokey and the bandit, & the Fall Guy.
They could have used a Pontiac Solstice GXP or a G6 coupe GXP like the ones they use in the Rolex series That are V8 RWD
From just the GM side the Corvette would have been a good one. So if GM wanted to pay they could had it but they didn't
Geddy, you are thinking WAY WAY too logically and this coming from me. You got to see this and think of this from your heart and from the love of Pontiac perspective. Otherwise, you just arent going to get it. It has nothing to do with what is in production. You think the Cobra Mustang is going to look like that off the showroom floor? Especially with that two tiered spoiler?
I remember few cars my mom drove over the course of my at home years, but I will ALWAYS remember her GTO. That woman could do things with that car that would scare the most seasoned NASCAR driver. My crowning moment in my life is when my mom was in the passenger seat of my Firebird and I made a turn that got the rear end out on slick road with traffic barreling down on us at about 55 mph and me giving it all she had taught me to stay in the throttle enough to keep from getting hit in the rear but feathering it enough and steering well enough to pull everything back in line and kept on going. When I looked at her and her eyes about to pop out of her head and she just kinda smirks and never says a word. She influenced my driving in a Pontiac, and I showed her what she had taught me in a Pontiac.
When Knight Rider first came on I could have cared less that you could not go into the showroom and bought a black Trans Am like that. All I ever saw, as if it were magnified with some space telescope, was PONTIAC. Who cares if the G8 isnt in full production or the GTO is out. Its still a PONTIAC
I should also add, that my parents owned a Turbo GP that just drove even further the point of Pontiac and its unbreakable link in my mind to not only styling that looks fast but performance that is down right deceptive to those who are caught unawares.
well put
Agree!
I love my TransAm's!
I remember seeing the new GP commercial in '97. That car was the only 'family car' that I ever liked. I never knew someday I'd have one. Now, I'm looking at the newer ones. I've never liked 4 door cars. (Just this one)
Smokey and the Bandit Rules!!!
