Wow! That thing looks awesome. Wish Gm made them like that from the factory. Awd, 5.7l v8, must be a crazy ride. $36,300 wasn't that bad of a price for a car like that.
i want it... now
wow.. im sure it wasnt the same tranny we have.. but i dont think anysort of 4T65E could hold up to that power... unless they have trannyman workin for them that is...
That is pretty cool, but $36k for what could potentially be a real basket-case is too much for me! I hope they had a typo on the wheels and/or tires, though...225's on a 9.5" wide wheel is bad news.
Pontiac had at at some national pontiac events.
Thing had to be jacked up to fill up the gas tank.
And every time it made a pass down the track it broke something in the tranny.
Its different. I wish they had more pics of it!!
The diff and transfer case areas are incredibly weak. It's an already somewhat weak FWD tranny with provisions made to power the rear wheels (and even then it doesn't work great in cars it was meant to be in). One reason that GM didn't go through with such a design. The point of the project was to say they did it. It doesn't necessarily have to work 100% or be reliable.
That's just what they decided to call this pototype. I presume it was a reference to an 8th gen Grand Prix (which is what the current G8 basically is).
Yes, this car had a different tranny, but it still wouldn't hold up to the power. It had a lot of issues, thus why the elected not to go through with it (much like why they abandoned the turbo on the 3.1L AWD Pontiac 6000s). I saw this auction a few weeks ago. Disappointed in what it went for (as well as many of the cars GM gave up from their heritage museum). Here are some other pics I have of this car:

Notice the use of the 8th gen steering wheel and "pig snout" exhaust tips. Also, the fog lights look more like the 8th gen. You'll also find that the gear shifter boot has breather holes in it, and the breather holes in the seats and door panels look different (though that might just be due to the photos), and the driver info center is completely deleted. Kind of interesting that it has the tape deck player in it, as well. I would hope it has a disc changer in the trunk. I have a lot more pics somewhere. I'll post them when I find them. I also have the Pontiac folder with the press release info for it, which I'll scan when I get a chance.
Even if they had gone with it, that transmission is like FWD with training wheels. It's heavily biased to the front wheels and isn't a smart AWD system at all. Actual performance would've been lack luster.
Kudos to them for trying.
If they had the technology I wonder...why not try to adapt the SmartTrac AWD system from the 4.3 liter V6 and turbo it? Makes more sense so me since it was done on the Typhoon and Syclone...idk though.
