my wife's grandmother was put in an assisted living home, and her family is in the process of selling her stuff. the old coot is crazy, and has extreme ocd about keeping stuff clean. she has a 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition that is in amazing shape. it is parked in the garage, has like 4 layers of floor mats all around, and has like 40,000 miles on it. my wife wants it, but it is in Pittsburgh, and we live in SW Wyoming, so like 1800 miles away. the price is good, even if we have to fly out there and drive it back.

one thing we discussed was having a transport company deliver it to us. I went online and filled out a questionnaire, an have received a bunch of estimates, the lowest being 850, and the average being about 1000 dollars. I've never dealt with transport companies, and so I don't really know what to ask them. they all say they are insured. anything I should know about?

on a side note, it is kind of funny that as soon as my wifes sisters heard this Explorer was going to be sold, two of them said they would buy it. neither have the money to make the purchase, one just declared bankruptcy like a year ago. seems like there is always drama dealing with family business transactions.

that price is about the average. You'd be better off finding a friend to drive it for you or flying and getting it yourself if you have the time

it will be cheaper for sure to fly out there and drive it back. I didn't think about having a friend go get it, that would be cheaper still.

gas and hotels add up with the cost of one airfair. your going cross country.

be warned, that engine is a real pos too btw. timing chain slides and tensioners wear out on them. engine needs to be pulled to replace the chains, theres 3 of them, its a real dumb engine set up.

my friends got a 04, the tps also has a nice dead spot to it that ford cant fix. its been there since day one. you let off the gas to take a turn then get back on the gas and you get nothing for about 3 to 5 seconds sometimes. its a real winning piece of crap from ford. and the seats pretty much suck too.

i suggest taking a test drive of a used one at a dealership or something first, to see if you really like it.

We had one about the same year a whole back and liked it. Are you talking about the v6 or the 4.6 v8? We had the V8 and I'm pretty sure this one has a v8. I did the math and to fly out there and drive back will be about 500. Plane tickets are like 100 right now, gas will be like 200, and then 2 hotel rooms should be about 150

when we buy cars from back east we use http://www.dasautoshippers.com/ they have been good to us and there is a depot in the bay we can go to if we want to pick the car up. we have had a 1940 buick, a 1947 chevy, 2 1972 chevelles, a 1974 corvette sent. Ao long story short they want the tank almost empty when you ship thing so the driver doesn't use it. also get top load. the reason for that is sometimes on the bottom load cars stuff drips down and can damage the paint.
im a cookie again yay me

I think you are figuring low on the gas. Only $100 for a plane ticket? Seems low to me, but if that's what you found, then ok.

If you did it right you'd only need one hotel room. You should be able to drive 12 hours a day easy. I did 1500 miles over 2 days myself once.

I've flown with my wife from Frankfurt, Germany to Paris, France for 45 euros, about 55 USD, round trip. It's was the economy version of economy, but that was a 15 hour driving trip.

I remembered my gas calculation wrong, it should be close to 300. 15 mpg at 1800 miles and 2.50 a gallon

Exactly. The 2 day 1500 mile trip I did, I left my house drove 90 minutes to pick my friend up at a Greyhound station. Drove almost 5 hours south and picked up a U-Haul tow dolly, drove another 45 minutes south to a shop where his car was and loaded it on the dolly, which was exceptionally fun considering it had no engine or transmission. From there we drove around 5 hours back to my house where we crashed for the night.

Got up the next day, removed some parts from a parts car I had in my garage and left to go another 5 hours to take his car to another shop. Unloaded the car, BSed for a few minutes, and I turned around and drove 5 hours home.

I also did a 6 hour one way, and 6 hour return all in one day as well.

When I was a kid my parents would make the 32+ hour drive from Las Vegas back here to SWPA all in one shot tag teaming the driving duties. 1800 miles should be more than doable by yourself in 2 days.
