So, I've been working a ton of overtime lately. I decided to do something special for my boys. I got a pair of TaoTao Boulder B1's. At first I was just going to get one, but I found a place that gave me a break on shipping multiple units. I got both of these shipped to my door for $1116. Couldn't say no. I would have killed to have something like this when I was a kid.

I bought a chinese atv YEARS ago, rocketa 250cc, thing took a dam BEATING. It was liquid cooled and the fan went out with maybe 10hrs or less of riding time. I kept driving it and it kept delivering. I had a hensim dirt bike for 8ish years, always started on the first kick.

I grabbed one of the same model years ago in a craigslist trade. It was rode hard and put away wet. Left outside without a gas cap for a couple years. New battery. Changed the oil, cleaned and capped the fuel tank, and rebuilt the carb. She fired right up. I was sold. The build quality on these is surprising considering the cost.

I might buy one some day, but there are lot's of things ahead of it. not having kids and not hunting any more put's priority's in other places.

I had a friend with one of these that he couldn't get running. He brought it over and I changed the cdi module. It was really cheap about $12. Then it started having all kinds of electrical issues. Turned out what looked like 18 ga wire was 24 with a really thick jacket. It seemed every time I got it running something else would stop working. One day the overriding clutch for the starter went out about half a mile into a trail and it spun the starter constantly. Made it back home and got it fixed. The engine was really great, but the electrical system was horrible. Loose crimps in the connectors and just sloppy wiring. There's a forum I think it's ATV connection that has a section on the Chinese atv's. I'm sure they will have a blast on them.

Having kids really changes your priorities!
I guess that CDI module failure is pretty common, but like you say... $12. No big deal. Plus, fixing those little issues should be a good experience. I can teach them how to troubleshoot and repair. Father/son stuff.
Don't get me wrong. There are definitely some corners cut on these things. There's no way I would buy one of the bigger units and go hard core blasting through the desert. But, for putting around the yard, these things are perfect. Especially when you consider 1.) They will outgrow them before they wear out. 2.) I will probably be able to resell them for better than half of what I paid new.

friend of mine got his daughter a kawasaki 50 cc atv a ways back, granted it was like 2 grand, but damn, it went 30 mph easy after the throttle lock was opened up and the carb was tuned up.
you just made father of the year for sure, kids wont get off em, trust me lol

Well... Maybe, maybe not. I still haven't gotten any fuel yet. All they get to do right now is sit on them and make "vroom vroom" sounds. Haha!

Yeah they are a lot of fun for sure, I wasn't trying to be a buzzkill or anything at all. The one I had over here was I want to say 110cc and like Scotty said once you open up the throttle it pushed me to 28.6 mph which was really fast for having my knees in the handlebars. I got an old school 2 seater gocart that is leaking from the side plate and oiled the brake. I'm going to have that as a project for me and my oldest daughter this summer.

Got a couple gallons of Arizona premium last night. Assuming their behaviour is decent today, they should be riding this evening. They'll have to take turns tough. I only have one JTC helmet on hand, with another on order.

Yeah, the power/weight ratio on these things is sick! I don't anticipate backing that limit screw out for quite some time. Small increments. I really like that they have a remote kill. Something like 30ft?

remote kill is nice. my friends had a long lead on the back of it that a parent could wear on their wrist and if the bike got to far away it pulled the plug out the back, kinda like a jet ski.

These have that too. It's like a "dead man" switch. I guess you're supposed to tie it to a belt loop or something like that. In case the kid falls off, you don't have a runaway atv. Yeah, same theory as the jet ski.

My buddy used a retractable dog leash so he could have his daughter ride in front and if she got into trouble or he needed her stopped he would just hit the little stop and it would kill it if she started getting away from him on his ATV. It was great for riding trails.

Very cool! Like I say, I would have given anything to have something like that back when I was young. We're pretty fortunate to be able to do that for our kids.
Well, I let the kids ride them around the yard a little yesterday. Mainly just to warm the oil before draining and to kind of break in the engines. If that matters. Got the old skank oil drained and filled with fresh 10w-30. Gonna top off the gas and take them to grandma and grandpa's this afternoon. They have a little over an acre to run around on. Not exactly wide open country, but way more than my front yard. Should be fun!

Nice. I just got my sons 1984-5 Suzuki 50 atv up and running and he has ridden it twice so far and loves it. The pic was when we first got it and I was working on it.

They got about 10 hours run time between the two. I was outside supervising (eating dust) the whole time, and I noticed a couple issues I have to address...
1.) Hot start. They don't like to start so easy after running for an extended time.
2.) Very low idle. To the point where it will just barely idle on it's own, and if you're coming down from WOT, it stalls.
I'm thinking if I fix issue #2, issue #1 won't be an issue anymore.

Bonus, they both fit in the back of the truck sideways with room to spare!
They were nowhere near that clean when they got home.
