My house's roof needs done. I've had 4-5 roofing company's blow me off. I need the top left and bottom front and back done. I've got some money from insurance but i've had to use some of it for bills due to my wife's inconsistent work as a substitute teacher.

    Here's my house

    (Deleted Link Done With Project)

I'm not opposed to doing it myself with help or hiring someone. If it's more than 4k i'm going to have to get a loan. I'm pretty sure the lower level also needs new sheeting. Insurance won't cover that...

Let me know if you know someone or want to help or have any experience with this at all. I'm kinda at a loss, I have no truck, 2 hammers, 2 tape measures, 1 pry bar, and one 6 foot fiberglass ladder.

I see why it's so expensive. According to the link you own half of the United States, Eastern part of Canada and South America right down through half of Brazil.

i used to be a roofer, 20 + years and your going to need a few more tools lol, depending on if you can walk your roof or not is a big factor as well, if its steep you will need roof brackets, and 2x4's to stand on, (so you dont fall off). and and at least 2 of these shovels, and a few tarps for the old roof to land on vs your lawn or bushes. and a real ladder fitting the size for your house, as you will need to carry each bundle of shingles up to the top of the roof ridge. about 80 lbs each. some roofing supply places have boom trucks and for a fee will boom it up to your roof. money well spent in my eyes.

the link you put up is not working, but in a lot of places you can simply drive to where ever the day labor's hang out, and hire 4 guys, most of them do have a clue what they are doing, believe it or not. these guys cost about 80 to a 100 a day, with lunch around here anyways.

for figuring out how much new materials you need, simply multiply length X width, each area, then add them together, that will give you your sq footage, and in the roofing world, a square = 100 sf. if you have triangle parts, you take the length X the middle of the width. dont forget the felt paper, and ice and water shield for the bottom course and the valleys.

and measure your vent pipes that come through the roof too. they sell new collars at the home depot.

heres a link to a guy doing a garage job. How To Shingle A Roof: - Tearing Off The Old Shingles And Tips On Shingle Disposal shows the shovel in use. always rip from the top to the bottom too, ripping from the bottom up is a waste of time, and one hell of a fight.

good luck with the job, as its getting hot, getting this job done the sooner the better.

maybe post some pics of the problem areas, from the street your roof don't look all that old, but the sun may rise on the rear of the house and the whole back side is shot to hell in a hand bag.

tip for all of you home owners, the side of your house facing east, well that side of your roof always wears out first. something to do with the morning dew burning off imo. but its always like this.

are there holes in the shingles or just dents, and is the wood under it, if looking from the attic is it dented? trying to gauge how hard it was hit.

but by the looks of your pics, that all looks like nails popping up under the shingles and lifting the one tab. some times that nail will push through the shingle and make a hole in it, then rain runs down the nail and inside, aka a leak.

and the guy who put your roof on was drunk i think, the keys are no where near straight lol seen a lot worse tho.

    do have any leaks now?

heres a vid how to remove just one shingle at a time to fix your roof, this is exactly how to do it. only way really lol

im thinking just buy the looks of your pics you could change out a few shingles and save a lot of cash, see girls do this, not kidding lol

now keep in mind new shingles will look "NEW" AND STAND OUT. so we can do and do all the time, is remove good shingles from the back of your house where it cant be seen if possible, and put the old ones on the front of your house so the repairs blend in, the rear just use new as your the only one whos going to see them, and you can say see all them real white shingles, yeah i changed them....

Tear it off and reshingle it. Gable roofs are cake. What is this about a 4-12 pitch?

This is a prime example where food+beer+friends=gettin' er done.

If I lived close I'd help ya for a case of beer. That's a fairly simple tear off and re-shingle. I've done hundreds of roofs jus like that one. These fellas know what they're talking about. Use architectural shingles if you want a simple crash course in doing a roof. Simple as pie to put on and the finished product looks great imo. Alot better than 3 tabbers.

I haven't been in that portion of the attic yet. You have to crawl over a stairwell and then into the attic. It's a real neat place they put the access... NOT! I've seen some roofers feet kinda sink in some when they walk across the bottom half. I'm just getting tired of being played. I've called 5-7 company's and had 4 come and look at it and none will get back with me for an estimated cost. One went so far to get a re-inspect from ST. Farm but bugged out after they wouldn't give me any more money. It's annoying. Yes i've put it off almost a year but i have been trying to get it done and the local roofing company's are backed up due to that hail storm last May - June still.

I do have one case of shingles in my garage from the top left being redone and patio cover being redone before we moved in.

Too bad my brother wasn't still around. He was a roofer, and did a jam up job. I know a local person here that has his own roofing business and is reliable.
