All this stuff is going on during the spring, so i have time to collect more parts. I think i may start modifying the L26 intake when the HV3 comes in.

So i found an internet archive earlier today that describes whats been done to my block (its a zzp crate engine). I was looking it up to see why they bored it .020 over and what bearings were used.

    Quote from ZZP:
Every detail of the ZZP crate engine has been fine tuned for extremely long life and high performance. Each motor is built using the finest components, eliminating factory weak points and upgrading everything needed to withstand the abuse of a driving enthusiast.

Engine blocks are cleaned, magnafluxed, bored .020 over, square decked, and align honed and surface cut to a finish finer than OEM. The balance shaft is eliminated* and new cam bearings & freeze plugs are installed. Oiling to balance shaft is plugged. Oiling to vital engine components is increased.

All engines include a new Rollmaster double roller timing set with oil pump cover machined for additional clearance. This eliminates the guaranteed eventual failure of the factory chain & dampener setup.

Crank shafts are ground, micro polished, and custom balanced. Using proprietary techniques in this process is one of the most important steps giving the ZZP engine unmatched life, strength and high RPM stability. In fact, we have found that the flex of the factory crank shaft, not only causes premature failure but it robs the engine of high rpm HP. The work on the crank shafts represents a cost to ZZP of $5000 for a batch of 10 modified pieces. By using this special process we have virtually eliminated crank flex and solved a host of problems.

8 rib Powerbond harmonic balancer standard or optional SFI 5% overdrive balancer. We include spacing out the oil filter extension when upgrading to OD balancers. If you want your engine assembled with your balancer, we will need it prior to final assembly as all balancing is done custom with your specific parts. Please note that we will not warranty any engines not using our balancer.

Engines come with hypereutectic pistons and total seal rings. Optional forged and coated JE pistons are made from 2618 alloy with 52 series pins making them superior to the 4032 alloy Diamond pistons common in our market. Forged pistons recommended for builds over 500HP.

Rods in our base engines are magnafluxed, shot peened, and reconditioned using a custom jig. ARP rod bolts are standard. Optional powder metal rods provide increased strength and rigidity for improved high rpm and high HP performance.

    Engines include:

    • New oil pump with machined pump cover
    • Clevite cam bearings, rod bearings, & main bearings
    • Oil pan gasket, oil pickup gasket, front cover gasket, oil filter extension gasket, rear cover gasket, oil plug washer
    • New front & Rear main seals
    • Cam position sensor O-ring

All engines must be assembled to a long block for break in and include new aluminum lower intake gasket and valve cover gaskets. Every engine is assembled, pre-run and inspected before shipping. This ensures years of trouble free operation (see warranty info below). Break in oil is included and should be run the first 200 miles of operation.

*The counterbalance shaft has nothing to do with the balance of the engine. It is not figured into the balance of the rotating/reciprocating parts of the engine. It is used to remove vibration at lower engine speeds which are inherent to the 90 deg V6 design. Once an aftermarket cam has been installed, the balance shaft is actually counter productive. It doesn’t help with idle vibration and it can cause vibration issues at higher RPM reducing engine life and HP.

I'm not trying to scare ya...but I know of one guy that had like....800 miles on about 3 of their engines. Not sure what exaclty happened, but it didn't end well. I think ZZP told him to finally not come back. I think that whole fiasco is one of the reasons they don't even do the crate engines anymore.
Shea is the only other person that I know that still has one running.

This one has about 30k-45k on it because it was done in 2012. But i hear you. Their customer service has been hit or miss in the past. I know if i break something, im going to grab an l32 out of a junkyard to replace it.

And to think a few years ago, people used to say you couldn't rebuild a block to last a few thousand miles.

Mine's spare parts, and going 30k strong.

Id like to thank the guy who i bought the car from. He had the engine and trans built by ZZP and drove across the state to have them installed. He seemed to be the kind of guy that would have a shop do something to fix his car instead of coming on a forum like this. Oh well, $800 for the engine/ trans combo and i got to drive it back to my side of the state. How could i say no lol.

    Another update with pics.
Ive collected 99% of the turbo setup. All i need now is a TOG DP with a 3" exit. I also picked up some used ZZP Coilovers that could use a bit of cleaning.

I also found some pictures of when the ZZP crate engine was installed. If i was the one who installed the engine, i would have at least cleaned the engine bay a lot.
