SO my mechanic wants to charge me $700 cuz he thinks its the lower intake manifold gasket... I looked for vacuum leaks and I didn't find any. If I needed the gasket, would it be doing that all the time instead of on boost. and now I notice that it runs fine above 4000 rpm. It only happens when its going into decent boost between 2000-4000 rpm. Im going to try to do the fuel filter, spark plugs and wires and see if that does anything. is there anything else that is cheap that I should be taking a look at b4 I use this gasket as the last resort?

Tom... I don't mean to sound rude, but this might not be the best place to keep bringing up problems with the car. This is a Members Ride thread, GrandPrixgtp2000's to be specific. The purpose is updates to HIS car and what is going on with it. A few questions in relation is usually fine, but this is going back 5 days now and looking more and more like a hijacking. Again, not to sound rude, but unless you know him personally, I would suggest creating a thread of your own for your car and keeping the ball rolling that way.

It would also be more likely to get you more attention from other members that aren't subscribed to this thread itself.

Now, saying that, a few things. The fire recall was for both SC & NA GPs, also for most every other car that was issued a 3800 Series II motor. For the NA cars, they only received new spark plug wire holders to keep the wires from catching fire, and the GTPs were given new wire holders and a FRONT valve cover gasket, rear was replaced at the customers expense.

Being a 99 GTP it will have the old design LIM Gaskets, they will need to be changed, regardless. If they haven't failed, they will at some point. Go with the "problem solver" metal replacement gaskets, and make sure whoever does the job replaces all the other gaskets along the way, it will cost a little more but while its apart its the right time to do it. Also the coolant elbows get old and brittle, plan to replace them as well, aftermarket metal ones can be ordered or you can use the standard plastic ones. $700 sounds a little high for someone who knows what they are doing, but it is pretty labor intensive. Not a hard job, there are how-tos if you have basic hand tools, but you need to research a little on that yourself.
