Hi everyone. I just joined the GP world. I bought a 1992 Richard Petty edition with a twist. It has been stickered up just like a 1992 Daytona 500 Pace Car. Has anyone ever seen another one of these Daytona clones? Thanks everyone...It has 68,000 mile on it. It spent the last 10 or so years in a private collection.

that may be a legit pace car. On www.W-body.com there is a registry/bit of info on the TGP (turbo GP) and Petty edition first gen W body's.

i know there were white/blue and red petty's. seems most had the crosslaces with the powdercoating machined off the face of the laces.

im a huge 1st gen W fan, several locals have em (one guy i know has two TGP's and an l67 (sc 3800v6) swapped GP)

****in nice man, keep her rolling for posterity

I wish it were real, but the ASC sticker on it says March 1992, after the race.

that may not mean much, during the rollout of the ASC's it wouldnt suprize me that the car may have been stockish and not fully modified by ASC till after the event. lots of things are "made to work" for shows/exhibitions/media events for special edition cars.

with Richard petty enterprises involved with ASC/mclaren, prontiac, nascar, your looking at a 3 or 4 way juggling act to get the car ready for the race. finishing touches like custom stickers/plaques may have waited till after the race

see if you can find old footage of the race to make sure before you assume its fake

then again if the museum just copied the decals for a bit more interest in the car at least you know you have area's that have no swirl marks...

The actual pace car is on the Richard Petty Pontiac brochure. It was a GT car and had a bigger light bar. There is a chance mine was one of the "official" back-up cars. I know they do that at Indy with cars they plan to sell later that aren't exactly like the real pace car.

the one in the pic with petty is carrying the big whelen multistrobe units that could be permanently bolted on or magnetic new i remember they went for nearly 1,000$...id figure it'd be magnetic mounted. that second type of light is one of their magnetic mount only units with two rotators that you could buy back then for a couple hundo. it wouldn't surprise me that they took the original light to reuse on another pace car...its an expensive light to just leave on the roof of a car that could get stolen much easier than on top of a tow truck 10ft in the air...i khnow of plenty of folks that wouldnt hesitate to steal a hubcap off a pacecar...much less a top of the line (for the time) strobe...just look at what goes missing at the autoshows
the next generation of GP's had all the molded in strobes....
