Okay I'm looking for good reasons and experiences on why it is such a bad idea to rebuild these engines and not replace? I haven't hit the yard yet to check if these gtps are common but if they're not then where's the best place to look for a replacement?

Allot cheaper and easier to buy a used one and install it. If you want a 3800 to last more than 100 miles you need a machine shop to check and machine everything which can get expensive.

Well isn't taking it to a shop and having them machine it techniquly a rebuild? Mines now is at 205k is burning a bit of oil going to check in a few days hopefully its the pcv valve and not the rings... So if it was to blow I'd do a full rebuild including having it machined if needed but if seen a few commons here to not even consider the rebuild just replace

IIRC the bearing caps like to distort, therefore it's usually thought that lots of machine work needs to be done. Hence the desire to buy one for $300 or so instead.

    For replacements:
    1996+ Bonneville SSEi
    1996+ Olds LSS SC
    1996+ Park Ave Ultra
    1996+ Riviera with SC
    1997-2003 GTP
    1997-2004 Regal GS
    2004+ Impala with SC
    2004+ Monte with SC
2004-2008 GP with SC (Need TB adapter)

Lots of cars to choose from.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

If you swap out the motor you will still have a car with 205k miles with an engine that doesn't burn oil.

What are we talking 1 quart a month, 1 quart a week or 1 quart a day? Oil is pretty cheap for a car with 205k miles. I would run it till you have to change to motor.

Seemed like 2 quartz a week. Generally speaking the car runs fine no ecu codes at all. Just bought it two weeks ago so by the end of this week I'll clarify if a quart was burned or not and if it was what would you suggest?

You can always try running some thicker oil to try and at least slow down the burn.

As mentioned, it really comes down to how much oil it is actually consuming.

Does it smoke at startup? 2 quarts a week sounds like allot.

Used engines......... NA or SC doesnt matter just use re use everything from the heads up. Unless your doing a big build a little bump in compression and even using a L26 would be just fine.

    Just my 2 cents.

No way id rebuild one of these when pretty much every yard in the country is likely to have a few good ones.

I'd buy a 3 dollar PCV valve and toss it in there too, it might be bad and causing it to burn oil.

No smoke, hopefully it is the pcv valve. I'll run synthetic oil and flush the old oil and coolant. I'm replacing sparks n wires, 180tst, aluminum elbow coolants, voltage booster, zzp do with a zzp power log k&n aircharger then pushing a 3.4 with a tune hopefully the engine can take that...

    I guess you'll find out.

And skip the K&N, they are overpriced and arent worth it, plus oiled filters can ruin a MAF sensor.
