Find a local that knows these cars, shops are basically going to bend you over, dry.

A lot of shops will not do this unless its a speed shop, building RazeKars... Too many will say after it blows up that it was fine before, lol. Only if you know them personally do I think they would do it (normal shop). Otherwise, as mentioned, expect to pay a premium on top of outrageous mark up's! Just my$.02 : )

keep in mind that lim job will run you anywhere from 4 to 600 easy at a shop, a cam is much more work. so id think it will run over a grand easy.


watch some vids, get comfy with the engine and do it yourself.

Yup do it yourself. A shop is going to rape you. Do some research first, don't be so eager to mod until you learn the basics and get comfortable working on your own car.

the only thing my cars been to a real shop for is an alignment.

used cars have lots of maintenance that need to be dealt with most of the time. work on getting it road worthy, make sure its running well, then mod it.

with any luck a few smaller repairs will loosen you up for the big job.


i just did headers, getting the stock crap off is more work then putting the new headers on. keep that in mine, old parts fight a bit, new parts aka replacement parts then go back on so nice and easy. helps that you just took it apart 20 minutes ago too.

take before pics, pics as you go, any thing to make you feel like you have some back up help if you forget where something goes. then theres always some one around here who could talk you through something if need be. lord knows ive been there, as well as many others.

IIRC one guy got a quote from a shop to put his headers on and they wanted $900 to do it.

900? thats crazy, it took me like 4 hours having never installed headers on a w body before.

There's plenty of information floating around on here and the other forums about mods that you can learn to do it yourself. Then you say hey I don't have tools.. That's fine go out and buy a very basic set and do it yourself. At the end of the day you'll save yourself a bunch of money, and gain some knowledge at the same time. Only time I've bring my junk to a shop is for tint, alignment and some ac work that I just didn't have time for. I'm a cheapass and can't fathom the thought of paying someone to do something I can do.

i did my master cylinder a few weeks ago. the abs pump is bolted to the master in my car, so the abs pump and gears need to come apart, my last trip to a shop was for the abs to be re homed. cost me 40 bucks. i stopped by asked for help on the job, told the guy what was up, hes like AHH GM lol says go change the master, put it all back together, bleed it come back he will re home it. i was back 20 minutes later, hes like your done?????? yup, all done. thought i was gonna get offered a job lol

and it was scanner time.

I laughed at first.. you post United States as location and expect anyone might know what the labor rate might be. Reality is.. most shops don't mod cars.

If you cruised up here to me, I'd wack ya $300 for the headers and depending on the IC you have price would depend. There's a good amount of labor on an IC, pull bumper, mount exchanger, mount pump, run wiring etc etc. Anyone that does a decent install is not going to be cheap.

Like we've said 10000 times already. There's videos on YouTube for headers. Hell I watched one cause I was bored the one day and wanted to see if they did it the way I thought it should be done. And bill also has a great write up on how to do headers the easy way. All you need is a craftsman socket set or your choice to mainly work on these cars. Bill Kory smuts and others have intercooler knowledge they would share. Especially if you needed help and posted pics.
