Howdy everyone, first post on here.
My dad picked up my red 1997 GT Coupe from a police auction 3-4 years ago. I quickly fell in love with the beast of a car and have been doing what I can to save it from it's previous owner.
- As soon as it was running well (which included some radiator work and a water pump replacement) I went in on the stereo, replacing the stock with Alpine and putting two 10" subs in the trunk. I would eventually replace six of the interior speakers (I am yet to replace the tweeters, any suggestions?). If I go ahead with the tweeters, while I'm in the doors I will most likely wire my 8 speakers into a second amp, as I now have a head unit with two pre-amps. This would mean I couldn't fade the speakers, as one pre-amp is devoted to the subwoofers, but I'm not in a position to buy a new head right now with three pre-amps (unless anyone knows of any killer sales.)
- One day the radio went out unexpectedly. After buying a new Alpine head (my current with the two pre-amps) with no luck, we turned to replacing the BCM, which not only solved the radio problem, but fixed the interior lights (which had never worked) and now the key-in-ignition chime works and the radio plays until I remove the key. I pulled the BCM from (I believe) an '02.
- The power locks have never worked. After replacing the BCM they started clicking when pressed but do not lock or unlock the doors. Anyone know any common problems that I could try fixing?
- The power windows work but neither can be rolled all the way down, as the windows fall forward then can't be rolled back up. I have to stop about 3/4 of the way down on both and while the passenger window rolls back from there without issue, I have to push mine back into place to get it up properly. It must be either the motor or the track. Anyone ever had similar issues?
- It has been in two front-end collisions since we've had it, once with me (just after replacing the headlights, their frames are now shot and are held on with zip ties
) which meant a new hood, and once a few weeks ago by my sister (now we need another new hood. Good thing Pick-n-Pull is 50% off this weekend.) The bumper is in okay shape (as far as I'm concerned) but the black plastic behind it is pretty crunched up. I can't find bumper removal in my Chilton manual. Anyone have tips on removing the bumper?
- I have also replaced the spoiler (we call it the whale-tail) once or twice because the clear coat always chips (and for us it's cheaper to pick junk parts than paint). Anyone with similar problems or a fix?
- My gear shifter no longer has a head. One of my siblings snapped it off. Anyone done a cool replacement or know how to replace a stock one?
- My drivers seat has power movement but it doesn't really work. Trying to move it forwards and back only moves the right side of the seat. Not sure what to do here.
- Most importantly at the moment is a huge power steering leak which is preventing the car from being driven. We are hoping it is coming from a line and not from the pump or reservoir. The main problem (besides everything for the power steering being underneath and behind everything else possible) is that I'm concerned about finding the right line to replace. The one I have (which is hanging down almost to the street and is held on with zip ties-not my doing) looks like a crazy straw with hairpin turns (this) and that is not what I see when I go to my O'Reily or check RockAuto (like this. Anyone replaced one before? Are the straighter lines I'm seeing a replacement that eliminates the need for the curved one that is there? Other tips?
- The AC is no good either. I guess that's mostly a shop job. Doesn't matter though, I prefer the fresh air and open windows.
It's no surprise these cars are so loved. I wish I could put a few thousand bucks into getting the body straightened up and getting it painted on top of all this other crap, but for a car with 200k miles on it, most people think I'm just crazy. They don't see the sexiness that is a Grand Prix. That is my favorite part of the car (followed by the HUD and my stereo). Any tips or redirects to other threads are appreciated!
