Hi my name is Cory i just joined the forum i used to have a 1997 grand prix s.e was a great car sold it at 260,000km and had no major issues with it i recently bought a 2004 grand prix gt and now the transmission is acting up. it has 180,000km on it (111,000miles)

problem #1 when putting the car into drive it takes an extra second to engage into gear. if i put it into drive and give it gas immediately it will clunk/slip and kind of jolt into gear. if i put it into drive and give it an extra second or 2 before i hit the gas it always works no problems. Tranny shifts fine up and down through all the gears never slips except for what i described above car shifts smooth and pulls hard.

problem #2 Two days ago the car started making a weird noise from the transmission or torque converter. well under load at lower rpm's i can hear a metal rattling type of a sound almost like a bearing or something. when i accelerate without making the car down shift the sound gets louder and if i punch it to make the car down shift and really take off the problem stops anyways it does not sound good and is freaking me out and i am hearing it more and more not good.... the transmission fluid is nice and clear red not burnt or brown or dark and i have not done a tranny flush yet or changed the filter i plan on doing that next pay day and looking for debris in the pan and filter. any info from anybody who has encountered a similar problem and been able to fix it please let me know. the car does not surge or lug or anything when this noise is heard. there is no engine lights on at all car runs beautiful except for these trans issues.

Mine was doing some weird things I thought it was a sensor but the sunshell was busted.I would just get a used trans unless you know someone that rebuilds them.I got mine rebuilt for 500.00 But I took it out and took it to him.

i priced out a rebuild today and it was 3300 plus taxes that's installed... lol cheaper to buy a re-manufactured gm one with a warranty for 2150 with tax im in Canada **** seems to be pricey up here compared to the states i was hoping for some knowledge or advice on what part or parts might be causing the issues i stated so i can try to fix it myself i have been reading online and looking at some rebuild kits for 600-750$ bucks. I do all my own wrenching except for jobs that require special scanners and i have never tryed to rebuild a transmission yet. if i can for sure fix the transmission for 1000$ or under by doing it myself then that's what im going for. shop rates around here are crazy

Thanks for the link and yes tripleedgeperformance.com seems like they know what they are talking about I read a bunch of stuff on the website and sounds like they are the clear choice for this transmission. Prices look decent and everything but then I have to change my Canadian money to American and lose money cuz are dollar is only worth 89 cents of the american dollar and then pay for shipping and brokerage on the tranny at the border and if I have to send my old one in for a core charge or something I can see it getting very expensive, I am thinking about trying to order just the rebuild kit from tripleedgeperformance.com and a torque converter and trying to rebuild it wont cost as much do you think its worth it or should I say f@(k it save a bit more money and buy a new trans?

Your gonna want this. http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com..._to_Basix.html no core fee but being in the great white north the cost is gonna go up a lot for shipping probably. Shooting them an email or csll em wouldn't be a bad idea. Then you still have to get it installed. Maybe you could sell your bad one for some monies. Or see how much It would be worth to send your old one back.

I have this trans in my 05 GT. I would go this route if I were you. Install it yourself and save some monies.
