well the title pretty much says it all. I got a few questions. first has anyone ever replaced the head gasket on one? and could you list the steps to do so.
second which piston is piston one and did you have any problems with timing?
third question is what headgasket would you recommend.

alright so I haven't done a head gasket except on a lawnmower lol but anyway if anyone knows the 2.4 liter engine that they put in these I got some questions
well first off which piston is number one
second if anyone has done it do you have the steps to do so?
and I know this isn't in the right section but im kinda desperate right now

Oh. What year Galant? Is it a 92-98 if so its the 4g64.

They also put that engine in the eclipse so try and join one of those forums. I find lots of threads of people swapping out the sohc head for a dohc head with that engine, but haven't really found any how to's.

This would be a good time to get a Chiltons manual for it. Should list it out step by step. Forums are good to, but I've learned a lot from those over the years. Probably some type of new MLS gasket for it, have the head taken to a machine shop and checked for true, and then new head bolts.

The hardest thing about doing a head gasket on the 2.0 or 2.4 is setting the damn timing. The tensioner set up is stupid on them. They should have kept a similar tensioner to what was used on the 4g63.

the timing is really the thing im worrying about. I built go kart engines and all that so I mean I got some knowledge of a engine. I know car engines are a little different. and whats the easiest way to set a engine at top dead center?

When everything is apart you will find the mark on the crank sprocket to get it to TDC.
We did a 2.4 DOHC swap into my brother's dirt track Neon.
Thinking about it some more there were two different 2.4's. There was the 420A based 2.4, and the 4g63 based 4g64. As long as they used the 4g63 style timing tensioner you should be okay. I ripped the head off a 4g63T and did a complete headswap and had it running again in 2 hours.

alright because someone told me to find piston 1 and put a straw or something long in there and when it stops moving up that's top dead center. is that true?

Yeah thats how you can find TDC, but there is a mark on the crank sprocket indicating where TDC is.

do you know which one is piston 1? I think its on the far right if your facing the car

#1 is furthest from the transmission.

Chilton says a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant has the 3.0, sohc or dohc. I'd get you the chilton if it listed it right.
