Sounds like valves sticking in the valve body. You can remove it and clean the valves and bores or replace it.

Can we get a bit more information. When does it stop engaging, does it drive a little then stop working etc, is this only certain gears? How does the fluid look? It sounds like your filter may be getting clogged.
Valves sticking won't magically unstick after turning a car on and off typically.
Filters don't magically unclog... And if was a plugged filter that is the least of your concern. To plug a transmission filter that much there would have to be serve internal damage. Valves will return to the rest position after fluid flow stops if fluid is not bleeding out of the circuits properly because of a stuck valve or short solenoid.

Sorry I didn't elaborate. A filter can get clogged/blocked by crap in the pan. As you mentioned ...usually it is from severe damage. Stopping the engine stops the pump and the junk will fall back into the pan, usually giving you a few more feet.
I wasn't trying to setp on your feet Daheazle. The couple posts I've seen from you so far, it looks like you have a good bit of trans knowledge.
Ok so I put it on a code scanner and it said code PO742 torque converter clutch solenoid stuck on. Any ideas. It will only drive a couple blocks till I I decelerate and then it wont move till I shut it of wait a few seconds then restart and it happens all over again. Thanks
Oh I forgot to say that the tranny had a fluid and filter change 3 months ago.
It doesnt die whem you come to a stop does it? If i were to work on it. I would put in turbine shaft seals. Clean or replace the valve body and replace the tcc solenoid. Does the 97 have a 4T60 or a 4T65? I cant recall for sure and it may be either depending on the engine? If its a 65 i would also put a pc solenoid in it. It is also possible that it would need a drive sprocket support bearing, if it does you would need to replace the channel plate as well. You can get an idea on the support bearing by having it run in park or nuetral and listening for a rattling type noise. The noise would also go away in drive or reverse while stopped. Either way you are looking at some internal trans work
