I put the oil filter on personally 3 months ago. Hand tight.

Today while ATTEMPTING to switch to synthetic and a K&N filter, I completely crushed, warped, punctured, and destroyed the oil filter trying to remove it.....

?!?

I've NEVER had this happen before!!!

What do?!

yup hammer and a screw driver, you need to hit it near the top of the filter where it meets the oil filter housing.

in the future when you use your filter wrench, put it as high on the filter as it can go, its the strongest part of the filter and wont crush.

Make sure you are spinning it counter clockwise

Lol, I put it on hand tight.

I didn't use oil, but some cheap grease to install it... I'm thinking that may have caused the issue.

The point of this post is wth happened that it's stuck. =P

I only hand tighten my filters and always put some oil on the gasket. I just changed my oil filter over the weekend and I resorted to mangling it off with a channel-lock. I think that rubber gasket just dries up a bit and sticks to the mating surface; I wouldn't put grease on it though - just use oil.

Un... ***KING... Believable!!!

Bought an oil filter ratchet set. Nope. Put a screwdriver through it and turned... Nope. So I finally put my tire iron through it and all my weight... Now it's basically cut in half...

I literally hand tightened it when I installed it a few months ago..... FFS!!!

why not spray a little wd-40 around the seal to loosen it up?

And just being curious, what brand filter are you trying to take off? I know some advertise an "internally lubricated seal"

take the tire off. looking right at the filter, take a screw driver put it on the top left side of the filter, then hammer the screw driver, this will turn the filter.

you have to put the screw driver right under the filter housing, this is the hardest part of the filter, it wont break off, bend or nothing.

your giving the driver firm hits with the hammer, not rock crushing blows, a few good light shots should break it free.

You put it on too tight. Trust me, even though it's hand tightened, you still put it on too tight. Just put it on till you get ever so slight resistance, then another 1/4 to 1/2 turn and then leave it. Then check for leaks. Rather have it leak a little than spend hours trying to get it off. I **** you not, happened to me before, and all that was left was a cookie shaped top of the filter than was a cm thick where it screws in. Nearly impossible to grip...

I'll swallow my pride on this one...

I didn't take into consideration that the filter was upside down...

So I was tightening it the entire time...

But damn, after I started turning it the correct way, it was a ***** to get off!!! LOL
