First Road Trip Questions

I'll be taking my lady (girlfriend) and a couple friends on a road trip in my new (new for me) 2006 Grand Prix. It'll be the first road-trip I'll have taken in this car so I'm definitely pumped-up for the trip though I do have one concern.

My front tires are much older than the rear. They're down to the line found on newer tires that indicate it's time to replace them. I just don't want to drop that much just before our trip for these tires. Anyways, we're going from Grand Rapids to the Detroit Zoo and back. I'm assuming I'll be fine but just want to get everyone else's opinions.

I've babied this car so far and plan to going into the future. I'll be making sure the air pressure is perfect, it's perfectly clean, proper fluid levels, and make sure the oil is clear and at the correct level.

Now I should also ask in regards to oil, do you recommend every 3-5,000 miles or do as some people like to and just change it once you can see the fluid itself turning a bit darker (no longer clear)?

Oil every 3,000. Tires should be okay, just be extra careful if it rains.

Then when you get back, put them to rest with some proper burnouts.

Oil change intervals shouldn't go by color anymore because engines are burning cleaner, and can go 10k miles and still look pretty good.

I'd suggest going 3-4k (max 5k) miles on conventional. If you do a lot of city, go closer to 3k. If you do a lot of highway driving, lean closer to 4k.
With synthetic oil, I'd suggest 5-7k (max 10k) miles with the same rules as above(5-7k).

I've ran up past 8k miles on Mobil Synthetic and according to the oil test I did, it didn't lose any viscosity and could have went much further. Main thing is you HAVE oil in the motor for this trip lol

i do 5-6k on my oil.. Never looks that bad

I would put the 2 good tires in the front and the 2 bad ones in the back.

I usually go 5k or so on synthetic then change it and it still looks pretty clean then.

PS. Detroit is not that far from GR. I made the trip 2 weeks ago. You should be fine.

I was going to say, I'm not googling it. How far are we talking. And I agree, plan on doing it when the weather is clear if you have tires w/o tread.

And while I don't do it, the rule of tires is you put the better ones on the back. This way if you have to stop the rear won't lock and pass the front of the car.
