The base model is full of spunk with a 1.8L I-4, which produces 130 horsepower (97 kw) and 125 lb.-ft. (170 Nm) of torque. This base engine red lines at 6000 rpm, yet still gets great fuel economy - estimated 29 mpg city / 36 mpg highway with a manual transmission. The inline four is a front-mounted, transverse design with dual overhead cams. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base engine and a four-speed automatic is available. The all-wheel-drive version is available exclusively with the automatic transmission.
The high-performance GT engine, also a 1.8L powerplant, is rated at 173 horsepower (129 kw) and can rocket the Vibe from 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in the low 8-second range. The power comes from a combination of changes, including modified heads and the VVTL-i system that increases the intake/exhaust lift when engine speed is high, improving output and fuel efficiency.
The base model gets an even bigger boost with a newly available SPO (GM Service and Parts Operations) supercharger kit. Installed at Pontiac dealers, the SPO supercharger is designed specifically for Vibe's 1.8-liter engine and is fully warranted for the same period as the Vibe. With the supercharger, the Vibe will gain 7.5 pounds of engine boost and an approximately 35-percent increase in horsepower and torque. Combined with either the standard five-speed manual or available automatic transmission, this makes Vibe one of the great small performance rides in America.
