Hello, I am a somewhat new owner (got it in October) of a 98 GTP. I am from Eau Claire, WI. My first Grand Prix was a 1984 SE, which happened to be the first car I bought with my own hard earned money.
I got into Thunderbirds after my SE, but now I have another Grand Prix that I kind of paid $100 for. Short story, last year for his own safety I gave my brother a set of new tires that I paid $300 for. He eventually gave me the car (he bought it new) and the tires still had 2/3 of the tread left.
So I ended up with a GTP with 246,000 miles and it has only had basic maintenance in that time. I knew there was going to be a fair investment in replacing parts on it, but it should make a good DD for me.
First thing I did is change the front wheel bearings that were original. Actually, pretty much all parts are original minus headlights, exhaust, and outer tie-rods. During that process, I found the drivers side axle boot was split completely open. No idea how long it had been that way, so I changed both axles with new parts. The sway bar had both bottom tabs broken, but I hoped it would hold for the Winter and it did.
Sadly, the exhaust he had put on about three years ago was a cheapo job from the cat back. It was a early spring surprise. lol
Now I am about to change the struts/springs, engine and tranny mounts, trailing arms, sway bar, and control arms. At 257,000 miles I think it is time to give them a burial.
The body is in good shape. A couple rust spots beneath the gas door. The trunk lid is junk. It is hard to see from the exterior, but it has rotted from the inside out. I will be making the necessary changes to the spoiler with a replacement trunk lid. The only other bad section I found is that the rockers are rusted out. The guy that helped me change the exhaust even commented that the underside of the car looked great other than the rockers.
So, any other things I should look at changing out? I know the LIM should be changed. The valve cover gaskets need changed as the recall was never done. I will change the SC oil when I do the LIM.
How is that for a heya?![]()
