Hello. I'm new to the site, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference in superchargers for a 1997 GTP and a 2001 GTP. I had the engine of my 01 GTP replaced, and the supercharger on the used replacement engine was different than my original GTP. My friend says it may be off a 97 GTP, but I'm trying to find out which year it actually is. The main difference I see is the replacement Supercharger has two "air vents' coming out of it that we just capped off, while the 01 Supercharger does not have those vents. Pleas help! Thanks!

There were no supercharger changes I'm aware of for the 97-03's. All should have identical Eaton M90 Gen 3's.

You should not have "air vents" in your supercharger. My guess is that one is where your Boost Bypass Valve goes and the other I believe would be for the Exhaust Gas Return.

Like slick said, Pics would help. put them next to each other if you could.

97 is different from 98-03. If I remember correctly it had to do with the vacuum routing. I may be wrong though, but I remember there being a difference in the two.

96 and 97 (right, because the S2 started in non-w bodies in 96 ) has a black vacuum tree in the charger about 2-3 inches from the throttle body end on the front side of the motor. This was used for the boost control and fuel pressure regulator. A 96 charger will have a painted body, 97 and later, only had painted snouts. In subsequent years 98+ the tree was eliminated and the vacuum went around the charger in a horseshoe fashion. Both chargers are otherwise the same.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Ya I got an engine out of a Bonneville when my engine fubar'd itself. Has the older 98 SC on it... just capped off that set of lines and shes running like a top.

    ^^^ With Valves

    ^^^ Without Valves

**Take note of the BBV... its slightly turned on the older models... might have to get newer hoses to work accordingly

@ Explicit Shade and TLSheff, it is exactly like the one's you have pictured (both fittings are capped off like Explicits with rubber 'tube-like' covers with screws in top). Should I swap it out with my 01 supercharger?

Thanks guys. Your right, it is a 97 supercharger, which probably means its a 97 engine as well. I purchased the engine from Everdrive and did not know it was that old. I need to decide if I want to replace the 97 supercharger with the 01 one that came off my previous 2001 engine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

wont really matter, I just got a flexible hose to basically run from top to bottom on that valve so nothing goes in or out. since mine is a 99 and that valve never existed on the original SC, I just ran the vacuum lines like its not there and just capped it off. Car runs like a dream regardless.

look at the rotors from the bottom if you can. If they are NOT scarred and/or still have the black coating on them, they are fine. If it spins freely the bearing are most likely still fine. If you can rock the pulley back and forth and theres little to no play in it then the coupler is fine, install and enjoy. Otherwise its older and needs to have work done. Ive seen them on here tons of miles and still cooking fine, its all in how they were taken care of and engine maintenance.

Does the 01 supercharger put out more boost than the 97 one, or is it any more efficient?
