Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I don't have a Grand Prix yet, I have a POS Hyundai Elantra right now, and need to get something bigger. My wife has an '00 Grand Am SE that has been pretty much bulletproof, so I'm looking at Pontiacs.

I really like the GXP, and just had a few questions. Are these reliable cars? How do the trannies hold up to the 5.3? Any common problems for these cars? Any tips on what to look for?

    Thanks in advance.

Trans is so-so but grand prix owners are used to it. Check headliner for stain, sunroof leak is a common problem but easy to repair.

I've heard about problems with the transmissions in these cars and the GT/GTP's. Are some years better than others, or are they all about the same?

General rule of thumb: drive it like a daily driver and the trans will last just fine. Race it and you'll need a race transmission. Before joining this site, I never thought any automatic would hold up to 300+ HP, but they can and do.

By the way, I grew up in MN. You Betcha! Where in MN u from?

    And welcome!

I'm in Hastings, which is about 30 minutes south east of Saint Paul.

Well, I test drove a 2005 GXP last night. I noticed a clunk in the steering wheel at turning at slow speeds. The sales person was telling me that he thought it was a loose brake pad. I told him I really doubt you'd feel that in the steering wheel.

Overall the car was nice, but the business seemed pretty shady to me. The car was filthy, and didn't look like it was driven in a long time. Rotors were pretty well rusted.

I'm going to test drive an 05' GTP today, and see how that compares to the GXP. That GXP's V8 sure sounded good to me though.

Just thought I'd say welcome! And the 5.3 will be fine as long as you never intend to modify it. There is little support for them. And honestly, the GTPs have a longer reliability history and still have plenty of kick to make most people happy.
