I just bought my daughter a Grand Prix and found this site yesterday, these are great sites to learn and share information and help each other out. I belong to a STS Cadillac site like this and I have learned alot.
This morning my Son and I fixed his "Low Coolant" light issue on his 02 Impala with a 3.8L V6. I read on one site where it could be cleaned prior to replacing it and save yourself 50 bucks, so we tried it and it worked!
It was easy too. The sensor is on the left side to the radiator and the battery needs to be removed to get to it. The sensor is small, black and square and has a 2 wire plug on it and is under the fill neck about 2". To remove the sensor I found a small wire retainer that has to be unseated, it took a minute to figure this thing out but I managed to win.... once the clip is off the sensor will come out by wiggling it back and forth and pulling out away from the radiator. It is sealed by 2 O-Rings in the neck of the sensor. Plug the hole with a buddys thumb or a plug to keep from loosing much coolant and then clean the inside of the sensor real good with a degreaser and a Q-Tip. Then re-install..... Wala!!!
No more instrument light on all the time telling you that the coolant is low when it is not....
