Question: How hard is it to change the oil pan gasket on a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, comp g, 2004?

My family's mechanic stated it is around 4 1/2 hours of labor, most other mechanics are quoting from the same computer system.

Quotes are anywhere from $556 to $650 so far. They are all saying you need a special lift and crane to remove the oil pain. I looked at it and it looks to me like one of the easiest, straightforward jobs ever.

I've changed a clutch before so I don't see why I can't change a simple oil pan gasket. Do you know if you actually need a "special" lift and crane to remove the "carriage" for the oil pan?

Also, according to the computer system at all of these repair shops I called for a quote, there is a gasket on an 04, grand prix, gtp comp g. Thanks!

The oil pan is sandwiched and bolted into the lower right motor mount, so the engine has to be lifted up, but it doesn't require anything special; we used a lift from Harbor Freight, plus a tow chain and hooks to span over the alternator. Otherwise it wasn't difficult, just tedious. It took us two casual evenings after work, but we also discovered a few problems to deal with along the way - a stripped bolt and broken sensor sent us running around town to buy parts, plus the gasket issue. I think the worst part was laying on the ground scraping at the goo of the last seal overhead. If we'd done it on a Saturday it would've been finished by lunchtime

The 2004 uses a gasket. on the 04 the gasket has the windage tray built into it and has a steel oil pan. I recommend coating RTV on the 04 gasket. The 07 we are discussing has an Aluminum oil pan that has a built in windage tray which call for RTV as a gasket. The removal process is basically the same. The 04 has a different lower engine mount bracket.
