Sorry if this has already been discussed, but that's why I'm posting in the noob questions. I have tried researching as much about the topic of top swapping as I can.

How trusty is it to grab a non running car and clean off the still good stuff to use for a top swap? Example, I have a 98 GT, but could I grab this off craigslist? -> https://portland.craigslist.org/clk/cto/6062517481.html

The gen v is better, correct? So could this be a good deal? I plan on porting everything myself before I follow through with the swap.

That b**** is beat all to hell... lol but parts are parts, and it'll have a pretty good chunk of what you would need.

You could use quite a bit from it, but you would still need 97-03 L67 return style fuel rails. 04+ are return-less style. You might need to modify the alternator bracket as well, a TB adapter, and a few other things.

You're gonna need a way to tune it as well, and supporting mods.

I'd say it's a pretty good deal, IF you know how to work on a GP. Most would spend more than that for a complete top swap.

Thanks for the advice, I do really appreciate it. I probably would've overlooked the fuel rails.
I didn't think about the throttle body either. I can't use a 97-03 GTP throttle body then? I wouldn't know how an adapter would work, but it doesn't sound too difficult or expensive to get it figured.
I do plan on headers while I do the swap and a pro tune immediately after to make sure it doesn't all explode, but gonna do what I can as cheaply as possible.

So I guess my biggest concern was if the head gasket on this Craigslist car was actually blown (probably just a lim gasket, according to my experience) then the heads are still ok, right?

Wait, I see now. 97-03 have 3 bolts. 04+ has 4 bolts. So an adapter would definitly be needed.

A DHP tuner runs about $250, and you can use it as many times as you want. It'll pay for itself within a few weeks.

the 04+ cars are drive by wire, so you can't use that throttle body. if you swapped a gen 5 on for a top swap you would need an L67 to gen 5 throttle body adapter. all it is is a plate that bolts to the supercharger and then has places for the throttle body to bolt to. you would need L67 fuel rails, you L36 rails might work, but they might not have the correct spot to bolt down to. sometimes the heads get cracks inbetween the valves, so if there is a crack, that head is junk and you would need to find another. L32 heads do flow a little better than L67, but only by like 3%.

you wouldn't really need to port the gen 5 and lim, but you could gasket match the lim so there is less turbulence between the heads and the lim, and porting the heads will make a difference for sure. if you wanted to run a little more compression, you could shave the heads and use a thinner mls gasket, but you would likely have to run E85 or higher than pump gas fuel so it wouldn't have kr.

Or do an intercooler, meth injection, or a cam.

I think it would be best to just keep it stock pulley, get headers and a tune, and enjoy it like that.

That's the plan. Top swap and headers. I think it'll be plenty fun just like that. I just wanna beat the occasional Subey that rolls up next to me. Thanks for all the advice guys! This forum is awesome
