A family member of mine is looking at purchasing a 2004 Grand Prix with about 200,000 km on it for $800 CDN. He doesn't have a lot of money so I am trying to find out the typical life expectancy for this car?

    BACKGROUND CAR INFO
Its body is in good shape and the current owner has recently put $2,400 into repairs. Now it still needs the transmission lines replaced so the owner has decided to sell it. This makes me worried that the car is starting to become a money pit for the current owner. Also the dealer has to dig the car out for a test drive so I guess it has been sitting around for at least some of the winter.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I mean, you gotta look at it...., how good was it taken care of, receipts for maintenance, how long did this owner own it, ect. If someone takes care of the car I've seen numerous 04+ GPs hit the 300k mileage mark easy, heck, seen some 400k 3800 cars - got some parts last year from a guy who was pulling the engine out of his 2000s Bonnie with 410k, guess what, the trans died, not the engine, lol.

Although geared more toward the 6th gens, lots of good applicable info for the 7ths: http://www.grandprixforums.net/threa...ommon-problems

Wait...., 200k kms? Oh, so 125k mi... Man, that seems sketchily cheap - especially with that amount of money into maintenance. Say what the maintenance was all for?

Thank you for the advice Kaiser Pontiac. I will pass the info onto my dad. I too am a little worried that this guy is getting rid of the car after dumping a bunch of money into it.

Thanks for the help everyone. My dad opted to not chance it and found a similar Grand Prix for $200 more that had fewer KM's on it and was in fantastic shape.

The mileage is completely irrelevant in my eyes. You have to get a feel for how the car was maintained. You could find a low mileage GP that hasn't been well cared for vs a high mileage car with meticulous maintenance for the same price. I'd buy the well maintained option every time.
