    Hello,
Don't know what all to say. I have a 00 and a 04 Grand Prix. I'm not new to working on cars but I'm not a tech by any means. My 00 broke down back in August when omw to see my father before he passed away. Both happened so fast, thank god I had another car and it was close to home. Well, the car breaking down that is. I want to get it back running but financially it's going to take time. I'm disabled and in college, kicked the wife out for cheating and now just raising our kids on my own... maybe to much info for here... idk lol. Might be looking to buy a 3.8 for the 00 soon, any ideas?
    Thanks

It just started knocking really bad, high pitch, and really fast the car just shut off on its own. Right now I have it broke down to the block but don't know where to go from there. I need to see If it will turn by hand. Maybe I can just rebuild it. Any ideas?

If it's knocking from the bottom end, just scrap it.

Rebuilding a 3800 cost more money than finding another short block to swap in. Lots of machine work has to be done and if anything was done wrong, it will last less than 200 miles.

Then everything but the block is good? Or is there other part I should replace while at it?

You can keep everything but the block and crank really.

The camshaft, heads, covers, rockers/pushrods etc etc all can be reused if needed.

Depending on if it's supercharged or not, your answer may be a newer motor. The Lucernes and a few other GM's came with the L26 naturally aspirated motor. If you swapped a couple quick parts, you'd be back to running in no time. Usually those motors are much cheaper because they are new and plentiful.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Pull the pan off and make sure there are no metal shavings anywhere. If there are, you should have your top end cleaned.

I think it would be better to just find a cheap engine and swap it in.

I would say, if you looked hard enough and was able to drive a hour or three, you could get a engine off CL for a easy 200$, I see alot of them with all the suspension still on them, lazy sellers don't wanna remove everything, they just want to get 200$ off a vehicle they bought for 200$, and then have the rest of it to scrap/part out.

the local car yard sells long blocks for 180, as long as you remove the bits, like the Supercharger, alt, etc. Heads LIM, and block with all the internals is cheap
