Just bought a '93 GTP with DOHC and 5 speed. Have had GPs before ('67 Vert, '70 4-speed) but the first this century. Straight and central Florida rustfree but could use a respray, headliner, and some leather work. And a new timing belt just to be safe.

Would like to know if there are better replacement for the itsy headlights and if the little honeycomb grill inserts are specific to the GTP. Also need passenger taillight assembly.

Other cars are all over the map: 70 Judge (RA/4spd), 88 Reatta Coupe, 90 Reatta 'vert, '06 Crossfire coupe with 6-speed, '12 Grand Cherokee (tow car). Only thing they all have in common is AC & each has a garage door (no coffee tables) & except for Judge, all are 6cyl

I had a '96 Cutlass Supreme with those same headlights. Usually went through a pair per year. That got kinda pricey. Since those sealed beams are basically just a 9006 glued into a glass housing, I just did a half hour retrofit using this HID kit:

    http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...rch_detailpage

Take an old burned out sealed beam (that still has good glass), break off the plastic retaining ring, pop the old bulb out... RTV the new HID bulb in. Worked great since it's a quad bulb setup. No worries about Hi/Low beam stuff. Due to the shape of the housing, the cutoff was actually pretty decent. That was the single greatest improvement I made to that car.

Not my first W, had a 90 Bonneville bought new and kept a decade or so. Family car. & had a couple of 2.8/man trans Fiero (SE and GT), just my first modern GP.
Must admit I don't car for boost without direct injection but is a personal problem.

If just "basically just a 9006", any reason I could not do the same with SilverStars ? I like them in my other cars.

BTW my shifter seems to have long throws, never missed a gear but need to reach for 5th. Is this common ?

Finally, anyone know the gear ratios and final ?

No reason why regular halogens wouldn't work I guess. Only problem is, since you have no retaining ring, you have to glue the bulb in. Kind of a one shot deal. I liked the HID's since they last a LONG time, and, well.... HID.

Must admit I know little about HID, never had one but can learn.

Would these be as better start ? One thing I need are the best headlamps available that are legal.

    Depends...

I was just looking for the cheapest solution long term. I already had a pair of non working sealed beams. Free. Those housings would give you the ability to easily change bulbs. IIRC, there was nothing like that available when I did mine. Or, More likely, they were available, but I didn't want to pay $125 for them.

I was also less concerned about the legal aspect. If there was anything I could do to see the kamikaze deer better on those rural two lane backroads, I was down. Even if it was slightly outside the scope of the law. Just a fix it ticket anyway. I rolled the dice, and never had a problem.

Just a followon but after decoding the SPI this one has:
FV0 RATIO, TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE 3.67
    M27 TRANSMISSION, MAN S SPD, GETRAG, 84MM, 2.46 1ST, (assume that is the 284).

anyone know what the other gear ratios were ?

ps wondering if a misprint. Found something later that said :
    Getrag 284 5-speed: 1st: 3.46: 2nd: 2.28: 3rd: 1.48: 4th: 1.09: 5th: 0.72: Reverse: 3.00:

pps anyone have GP production numbers for '93 ?
