I feel it would make your life waaay easier if you just got a fuel pressure gauge and put it on the fuel rail. Sure you can push down the valve to see if it squirts but I think it's worth having some real numbers to go with.
I think HighOctaneRacing is on the right track, I had an airtex fuel pump on my GTP that was awful... the check valve in it was no good from day 1, after it would prime the fuel would run right back to the tank. I had to start the car while the pump was still priming. Replaced it with a Delco OEM replacement, and everything was fine.
