there is no such thing as a good tuner that you can get, only people that have tuners and know how to use them. digital horsepower is an older tuner also known as DHP, HP Tuner is another tuner. they both work.you can learn how to use them your self and have the power in your hands.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
I run what you see in my sig. Top swap on 04, Gen 5, VS cam. I put down 280 to the wheels on 3.5 pulley. I had no knock on E85 and Tim kept bumping up my timing. I am at 22 degrees timing right now. I need to pulley down.
Also I am running the VS cam with yellow springs and was getting valve float. Had to drop my WOT shift rpm down. Need to swap out for 105s.
I am non-intercooled and run stock 195 stat. Higher compression from top swap.
E85 feels good! Good power. Driveability is same as stock. Tim at ZZP did a good job getting it dialed in on the dyno and during the test ride. I have some cold start trouble so I am adding fuel to the crank vs temp table to get that straightened out. I wish I would have swapped pulleys prior to the dyno and started smaller but I will work on that at home.
Also I upgraded to 60 Injectors and new fuel pump and filter. I think this is a must!
When I switched over I pulled up to the e85 pump. I removed the Schrader valve, hooked a hose on the port, and stuck it in a gas can. Stick a wire in the fuel pump relay and pump out all the 93.
That VS cam on E85 pulls hard on the street. Fun tire burner but no traction. No traction below 30 with summer sticky tires and I can spin in the rain at any speed. Annoying.
On a side note e85 has a sweet smell. Some describe it as popcorn smell. It smells more fruity to me. It gives the exhaust a nice smell! Lol
No matter what you will need tuning done. Either buy the DHP interface and grab the software from the Dropbox or get HPT. I had a mail order from ZZP before the dyno. It's not ideal but it worked fine for me.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
what indications did you have that you were getting valve float?

most people buy a tuner and have no clue wtf they are doing and need to learn. lord knows i had no clue.

the question that was asked and the way it was asked suggested to me the asker didn't know enough about tuners to understand how they worked.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
and like i said, most dont have a clue going in and learn on the fly. how i did it. i got walked through a hand full of things and that helped a ton. i tend to pass on what i can to others in the same boat. ;)
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
I do not know. Tim advised while he was tuning it on the dyno that I was getting valve float before I reached peak HP and suggested I replace my springs.

Several updates.
I increased the fuel mileage DIC readout multiplier by 30% to correct my MPG.
I dropped down to a 3.35 pulley. Still zero knock. Going to run this for a while then probably pulley down again. I am guessing I am right around 300 whp. I just switched over to my winter tires, BF Goodrich G-Force Comp-2 A/S. Anything in first gear is spin spin spin.... Annoying...
I also increased my crank fuel vs temp by 30% to eliminate the cold temp hard starts.
E85 vs 93.... fuel economy vs. price is a wash. Fuel economy took a hit but E85 is also much cheaper! Technically I am saving 5 cents a gallon right now by running E85 based on cost and mpg.
Driveability is same a stock.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
it seems unlikely to have valve float with a vs cam and 90 lb springs. I've heard people revving an xp cam engine to 6200 with no valve float, and a vs cam doesn't need to rev that high to make the power it can make.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
Take away some timing from first to help with the wheel spin.

please explain how you remove timing from one gear? cause i aint seen that memo yet.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
I think the HP estimate is a little high, I don't see that baby cam with E85 making 300whp just yet.
Needs more boost.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
You take timing away in the lower end, I had read about the ls guys doing this because they couldn't get traction
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
Definitely needs more boost! Haha Still no knock on 3.35. I was at 282 whp with the 3.5. Going to run the 3.35 for a month or so and datalog it to make sure I don't get any knock. Then go down a size and try again.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
Sounds like it's leaning out on the top end. There shouldn't be valve float on that setup.
What fuel pump did you put in? How did you put in said pump?

Bet it does. My GXP made that with E85, some silly priced air intake, and 3" exhaust.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
Running a AEM 50-1200 pump in the canister with the feed pickup through the bottom. Full tank of E85 at time of dyno. They measured fuel pump PSI and wideband O2 throughout the runs. They set the shift rpm at 6150. It pulls hard all the way to shift point. Makes you want to up the shift rpm but he stated it looked like I was starting to get valve float above that so that is what he set it at. He recommended I replace the valve springs or upgrade to 105s so I could up my shift RPM several hundred. I am running blue 90's. I didn't do the dyno run/tune so I don't know the specifics of how to tell boost induced valve float. I am just relaying what he told me and I have no reason to doubt him. I bought the springs used so I don't know how many miles are on them. I don't plan on swapping springs just to get a couple hundred more shift rpm. It's a DD not a race car.
Still need to dial in pulley size.
When is the greatest weather condition chance to get knock on E85? Cold weather, running higher psi, with E70 or whatever lower blend is in the pumps now? (Ohio winter) If I tune for pulley/timing/KR now will I be fine in the summer heat on E85 with the higher octane? Trying to figure out if I tune with lower octane E85 blend fuel in cold weather will I have more or less chance of KR in summer heat on E85 (higher octane blend)?
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
I would just keep the 3.3" on it or whatever. Easier that way.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
There's no reason to rev it high, it's not worth running it over 6k, all your power is going to be under that anyway.
E85 won't knock unless you're really pissing the engine off. Don't worry about it. Nick had a junk ass GTP with a Gen5 on manifolds and stock valvetrain, and it never knocked....ever.
Re: The E85 Thread... Questions and Answers
I doubt highly the 90 lb springs had valve float, unless they are wearing out. I ran 90's with my XP cam, and revved that thing to 6200, sometimes shifting at 6300, and I never saw any indication of valve float. there is a way to see if you have valve float by looking at your map pressure and your maf hz, but I don't remember exactly. I wouldn't worry about revving it higher anyway because the VS cam powerband peaks at something like 6000. it is more of a mid range cam with good low end.
