I'm gonna have to do this in mine I think. Mine goes dark (or doesn't even light up) until I hit a bump, then it gets bright. Possible loose wire but I need to change the bulbs behind my trac, oil, etc lights anyway so may as well go full force. Thanks for the write up, saves me from having to ask how to do it lol

Vishay / Small Signal & Opto Products (SSP) - BPW21R - Emitters and Detectors - Photodiodes - Allied Electronics website and part for photoeye diode if the solder fix did not work. I replaced mine and it worked great

I'm going to give this a try tomorrow. If it's dark outside the HUD is visible. Invisible in daylight. The adjustment works ok so it's not a spring issue, just a dim HUD. Must be the solder joints on the photocell.

Hey how'd you guys get the screws off? I can't reach the screws on mine with a screwdriver, windshield gets in the way, and the trim piece won't come off fully.

    First..get the trim off
Then use a screwdriver.. I used a 7mm nutdriver, which is basically the same thing.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Just a little fyi for all of you out there. My sunroof started working again and rear windows, blower motor worked on all 5 settings, as well as the hud dimming issue.

Is this just repairing the wiring connector??

When I took my HUD out all the solder joints looked good so i didnt remelt it. I cleaned the photocell off because of a little dust. I then put it back in and it was still dim but not as much as before. Did the solder joints look perfect before remelting the solder?

The ignition harness fixed mine. Now I have no sound from front speakers??? Could that be ignition harness as well? Who knows, it's like the whole brain of the car passes through that thing

yes they look perfect. you need to melt it up and add additional solder to the 3(?) solder points.

I've had this link saved for a good long while. It might be a useful addition to this thread on the HUD repair

I'm a noob, u just put new solder at the tip (on the bottom of the round connector looking thing)? never solder before, a little confused. I do not have this issue but, would like to know how to do it just in case.
