yeah I figured if anything it would leak oil from the lifter galley.. guess I might as well wait and see no need to get in a huge hurry if they end up not leaking at all

those bolts are in the head, not the lifter valley. (coolant flows through the heads, not oil) they will leak both over time. my end lim bolt by the egr, leaks coolant, it looks like its crying when the cars hot. no oil just coolant. the other bolts will leak out a black thin watered down mess into the bolt valleys. like you see in that video.

if you failed to clean the old bolts of their old sealant you may be ok.

Ever have the heads off and look at what theyre in? Theyre in the crankcase vacuum space. In other words they are in the same cavity as the rockers.

Only thing most are in is oil.

Guys, great video and write ups. I'm going to dive in and attempt this repair on a 98 NA 3.8. Question: Why did you replace the lifters in the video? Were they worn? Does this fall into the category of "while your're in there"? At 153K miles, what else should I replace while I have the motor open? Water pump maybe?

    At 153k, I'd do the
    pump + gasket,
    aluminum coolant elbows,
    thermostat + gasket,
    injector o-rings,

    If you're feeling spunky,
    timing chain,
    timing chain tensioner,
    timing cover gasket
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.

Not a question of spunky, it's a question of $$$$....daughter is away at school so I'm driving as a "spare" ride to save the 10mpg the Suburban gets. It can stay in the garage for a week while I plod through the work, but I have to draw the line at how much I can spend. Seems like the vehicles are killing me with repairs this year .

If money's the issue, then replace parts as they break.

Wow...great write up! I haven't done this type of engine work since I overhauled my '66 El Camino in the mid '70's so this was a perfect tutorial. I have a 2001 GP GT with @93k. LIM has been leaking for a while but I just got the nerve to fix it. The only hang up I had was removing the LIM once (I thought) the bolts were removed. After trying everything short of a C4 charge, I discovered that I missed two bolt inside the LIM. One was completely submerged in oil and the other was just difficult to see (I'm old...). Here's a pic in case another novice runs into the same issue. Thanks again and great site!

You are positive you took out 12 10mm(3/8") bolts? Triple check. If so.. that's all the bolts.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
