I may be wrong, but in the past I have heard that the egr is used to lower combustion temperatures. And one of my professors said he has seen blown engines cause it was running hotter, due to the egr being disabled.

    yes and no.

it lowers combustion temperatures because it is taking up excess space in the combustion chamber since its inert. the only time the EGR is active is during cruise, so there is absolutely no way that someone blew up their motor because they disabled the EGR.

I don't recommend full removal unless you have a way to tune it out.

Am I crazy or has nobody else caught it yet? Putting an air filter on the end of a cut egr tube will allow unmetered air in and throw your o2 readings off... Which will make you run either lean or rich(can't remember) but a tube that big will let a substantial amount of air past the maf which is never good.

    is this true?

i was just going to rip it off and let the check engine light stay on. that wont bother me.

i dont want to lose gas milage.

whats better rip it off or put filter on end of tube?

ya i know that but will a filter on the end of the tube suck in to much air, thats not going through the maf and cause a problem?

i would rather get rid of it all and plug the holes put i can tune it after, what would that do to my car?

YOU NEED TO PLUG EVERY HOLE YOU CREATE.

its not that difficult. if the EGR is not connected to the motor you have to plug the hole in the lower intake manifold. if the EGR is not connected to the rear manifold you need to plug the hole in the rear manifold.

hint: TAKE OFF THE WHOLE EGR VALVE.

By drawing fresh air through the EGR valve, the system will compensate for the extra incoming volume of air. Since it is fresh air, instead of exhaust gas, it will create a slight lean condition, which will be compensated for by the o2 sensors adjusting the fuel trim.

So, if you want to disable the EGR system without creating a CEL, just put a filter on the pipe leading into the EGR valve from the exhaust manifold and block off the hole out of the manifold. Technically this doesn't actually disable the system. It simply allows it to draw in fresh, cooler air instead of hot exhaust gasses.

Yes but exhaust gasses are "inert" cause th oxygen has been burned out of it... the fresh air is full of oxygen... The maf will see a certain amount of air going in and then the o2 sensor will see a certain value for that air(way outtta wack with a filter), when you add an unmetered fresh air source it can't really compensate for something it doesn't know is there and isn't supposed to be there. so it sees the air from the maf getting a certain o2 reading after burnt which is now way off from adding fresh air and is running it lean based on the 02 readings which is way bad for the motor

    So don't do it?

I like the fact that the intake will be cleaner and cooler, but don't want to hurt any thing.

I would rather remove it completly but don't have the mean to tune it after.
If I remove it do I have to tune it?

No you don't have to, you will just have codes all the time that you can't get rid of til you tune them out.
