Had a very similar sounding problem last year around this time. Was the wires coming off the harness frayed. Check those and report back!

Tracked down problem yesterday...it was in wire harness. The lead going to sensor was broken where it makes the loop going to plug behind wheel. No damage was apparent until I removed the outer protective shielding...then it was obvious. Sending photo, hope it comes through okay....thanks for all the help.
