Oil leak

Im noticing an oil leak on my 02 GTP. I pressure washed the engine and best I can tell its coming down around the crank pulley area. Ive read the 3.8 engines usually don't have a issue with the crank seal leaking.. if not that then what else could it be. Its so tight in there its hard to tell where its coming from. I checked the oil sender and it looks dry. Here is a pic.. ( looks like I need a new motor mount as well )

I'd say to give it another good washing and re-check, there's still a bunch of gunk on your subframe and oil pan from what I can see. I'd guess it could be coming down from the valve covers, or its the front main or oil pan

looks like its the oil pan judging by the oil drips on the pan bolts on both sides of the pan.

if it was the crank you would clearly see it leaking from behind the balancer.

put the car on ramps, or jack stands get some degreaser and soak the bottom of the engine down, then power was it all best you can again.

then watch for stuff to get wet again. clean that motor mount and the bucket its sits in. oil leaks kill the engine mount.

also take a paper towel folded up to a square and wipe under the rear valve cover lip, if it comes back wet with oil the covers leaking. do the same for the front. do this on a cold engine. you can get a nice burn if not careful.

mine was a drip a second. so i made a trough to catch the oil drip so it didnt hit the mount any more while i was trying to fix, then let it run. once it warmed up it leaked.

Goober... Excellent idea. I guess it was the crank seal ? Was it hard to change ?

it was a new seal. i had just dropped that engine in and the seal broke, and i had a deep groove in the balancer. it needed a repair sleeve and another seal.

seal swaps not to bad, i took a screw driver to the lip and hammered it under, then pry it out.

getting the new one in i used 2 hammers, one was wood handled so i used the butt end on the seal edge while holding it firmly with the one hand, then tapped it in with the other hammer hitting the top of the wood hammer. a block of wood would work too.

the balancer, you need the right bolts for the puller, they are not in the puller kits.

http://www.grandprixforums.net/threa...a-crank-sensor the bolts you need are listed here. iirc i used 56 or 58 mm long bolts. worked just fine, puts the puller a 1/4 inch off the balancer, and you need that little bit of extra room.

air gun is king for this job, but can be done with hand tools.

cool.. thanks.. I went through the the bolt thing for the puller. I went to AZ and rented the puller and found out they didn't have the correct bolts, went to hardware store and got them so I keep them in my tool box. I had to replace the crank sensor on my wifes 04 Bonne, I was just wondering how bad it was to pull the seal as well.
