I just bought my GTP a few days ago. I noticed a little oil leak so decided to put the car on ramps and pressure wash the engine and underneath so I can try and figure out where the oil leak is coming from.

After I finished I started the car up and it ran for about a minute and I heard a loud bang and found the oil filter had blown off ! Of course I shut it off asap. The PO had recently within the past week changed the oil and it was a no name cheap oil filter on it. I went and got a A/C Delco filter and put 4 qts ! back in it to fill it back up and everything seems all good now.

As far as I can tell the engine looks very clean on the inside so I don't think its a sludge issue causing the filter to blow off. I know if someone leaves the old filter gasket on the housing can cause this but I didn't see an extra gasket. Worries me to drive it now

Anyone ever hear of this happening ??

Never heard of such thing happening to anyone else. If you were driving this could of been an engine ending deal.

You are probably OK now, if you're using an AC filter and tightened it good. My old Pontiac 400 did this three times before I figured it out. I was using Fram filters at the time and if I revved it on cold oil... well she would dump the crankcase on the ground. Immediate oil smoke coming off the header was my cue to shut down and I never did hurt it. But I did start using AC Delco filters and have ever since. The difference was the gasket is actually lightly staked in place on the Delcos and is or was not on Fram. So the gasket blows out of the groove, then its loose so it unscrews and ker-plunk.
All Grand Prix, all the time. 69 Model J, 99 GT & GTP coupes. All junk, haha.

    Thanks for the replies..

Come to think of it, the engine was cold and i remember i revved the engine a little and the filter blew off so i guess a combination of cheap filter and cold oil.
