Are you talking about that round diaphragm actuator thingy? You have to be a 90lb double jointed circus acrobat to get to it, but its not impossible. Haven't replaced one but I did have to work on mine where it popped loose.
I think it is the round diaphragm thing and the plastic rod goes up and down into it and I can't see what the other end of the rod goes to but after looking at that picture again. The top the rod looks like it broke of something.
and yeah it looks like I need to be a god damn contortionist to fix the damn thing. At least on the drivers side.
Going to dig into more this weekend.
Wonder if this would help find any other problems.
You must have a CJ2 unit (pictured below) to view this information. To enter diagnostics mode:
Press and hold both the Driver and Passenger knobs in simultaneously until the display changes to read "-00". To change position, turn the Driver knob to the desired number and turn the Passenger knob one click to view the data for that position.

This is a list of the Trouble Codes displayed by the CJ2 Unit.
A two digit code indicates a current fault while a three digit code indicates a historic fault.
Trouble Code Description
00 No System Fault
01 or 101 Inside Air Temperature Sensor Short
02 or 102 Inside Air Temperature Sensor Open
03 or 103 Ambient Outside Temperature Sensor Short
04 or 104 Ambient Outside Temperature Sensor Open
05 or 105 LH Electric Actuator Open or Short
06 or 106 RH Electric Actuator Open or Short
07 or 107 UART Serial Data Line Fault
08 or 108 Solar Sensor Open
To clear codes from the CJ2 Unit, press the A/C Mode button.
Well, find the problem.
This little fukcer has caused me problems for over 10 years.
It was very fun to get out, just hope I could get the new one in. Was going to superglue it but would be pissed if it broke again..
Thanks again Scotty for all the help..
Drivers side
How do they normally break?
Passenger side looks fine, but I didn't check to see if it moves. Doing that today.
Yeah, everything seems to function fine. Just metal arm broke.. Have no idea how that could happen..
I've been under my dash many times, but never messed around with these Actuators. Hell I didn't even know they were there.. lol
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
It works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
But holy **** that thing was a ***** to get back on that little hook!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After fighting with it for over 3 hours with breaks in between. I realized the hole on the metal arm is very small on this new part compared to the longer oblong hole on the stock part. So in order for me to get the new part on. I would have raise it almost horizontal and slide it on the hook.
Ummmmmmm, that's not going to happen. There is no room. lol
Even making the hole big enough was still hard to get on the hook.
I got a coat hanger and made a hook, so I could wrap it around the other hook. Pulled it down so I could slide the metal arm on to it. Trust me it took way more than a few trys to get it.
ohh, Then I turn my car on to test it. Climate Control doesn't come on!!!!!!!! I was literal about to drive it off a bridge..lol
Come to find out I took of a ground wire when I un-installed that lower metal piece. I have no idea why that ground wire way over by the headlight switch has something to do with the Climate Control but it does. So it came on.!!!!!!!!!!! All good.
Now just need to get my A/C vacuumed and recharged and will be ready to go..
I can't tell you how excited I am. This has been 10+ years with no A/C and almost as long with this air flow problem.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Thanks Thanks again Scotty and Bill and anybody else for the help.
i didnt think those things were such a pita to change. that part sucks, but now you'll get cold air in the face when the a/c gets repaired.
10 years is a long time for no a/c. some how the a/c is one of the very few things ive not had to mess with in my car. its blown ice cold since the day i got it. if it was to fail, it would be high on the list of repairs asap!!!!
I couldn't have said it any better than that...period. LOL
Just went through this myself, although I did have a/c, it didn't blow out of the vents it was supposed to and blew from the defroster, weak, blah. With Scotty's help, now it'll blow you out of the car in a couple of mins. on max! Fixed cruise, too, which hasn't been working since i bought the car. Now I'm so used to not having it, it's hard to remember when I get out on the highway that I can actually set it and CRUISE! lol
Thanks! Mine was a matter of vacuum lines being jimmy-rigged and blocked off by the previous owner. I just hope I never have to replace the part you did, sounds like it was a PITA...
Now get that a/c charged back up and enjoy!!! I know I am...lol.![]()
